If you buy Leopard packaged with the computer then you obviously don't pay extra for it, otherwise you will have to buy it seperately.

Considering the above, if you can wait then it might be a good idea. Some say that Apple gives out discount vouchers or coupons applicable to buying Leopard if you buy a Tiger equipped computer just a week or two before Leopard release. I have no personal experience on this.

Hey, Keyo, I had the same questions, and after viewing practically every related thread on this site came to the following conclusion--

Although it is likely that Apple will give free Leopard upgrades to those who purchased new Macs within the last month preceding its release, it is a possibility that they won't and everyone will need to fork over the ~$130 for the Leopard upgrade.

However, I hear that there are literally thousands of people waiting for the leopard release to purchase their new Macs. Which would mean that Apple is going to be flooded with orders at that time. So it could possibly take a month for you to get your MBP after ordering it.

I, just yesterday, decided to go ahead and order my MBP now, and just order the Leopard upgrade when it comes. I'm sure Apple will be able to turn-around the Leopard software orders much faster than the customized systems.

Although I am taking the risk of having to pay for Leopard, I am at least guaranteeing that I will have my MBP before Thanksgiving. :)

    Anyone else care to comment?

^ What is your waiting time to get your MBP? How back-ordered are they at this point?

apple won't give leopard for free unless you bought the computer just a couple days (maybe, thats MAYBE, a week) before it came out. within the last month (prolly october 1st), they will give a discount of some amount.

thats more or less what i have seen in the last few years.

I've chatted with several Apple folks on their website chatline and asked about getting free Leopard upgrade if I buy the MBP this month before the Leopard upgrade. The answer I've been getting from these folks is that they "don't know." These sales folks stated that they don't know when Leopard will be release this month and that if an order is placed today, there isn't any voucher for free Leopard upgrade that they know of.

    1) As far as we know right now, yes, it will cost you $129 (and expected to be $69 with Student Discount) for Leopard. However, there is a chance that Apple gives all users who purchase a Mac in say October a free upgrade to Leopard. This isn't confirmed though.

    2) I don't see why not. Leopard is going to be a nice improvement over Tiger and getting it preinstalled is great! There are no major issues in Leopard looking at the recent Betas.

again, this is highly unlikely, as i said earlier, they will prolly only give free (if at all, maybe just dirt cheap like they did with iLife 08) to those that purchased a computer right next to leopards release and a possible discount to the others. there is no way they would give that many free versions out, they are a business after all.

It does depend. Apple mainly makes its money from the hardware; iLife and iWork and OS X are so cheap because the profit is more from the Macs and such.

But yes, maybe not necessarily free, but there's a chance that all Macs bought within this month get some sort of discount on Leopard. Apple isn't that inconsiderate ;).

And plus, the iLife '08 $10 upgrade was supposed to be limited to a certain amount of time before the iLife '08 launch, but a lot of the members here who pressured the Apple staff a bit got their iLife '08 for those $10 as well, despite being outside of the timeframe that the $10 upgrade was originally intended for. Apple's staff are too nice :p.

No one really knows at this point...9to5 Mac claims there will be a significant MacBook update this month, while ThinkSecret thinks its just a Santa Rosa refresh contrary to 9to5 Mac claiming the MacBook will turn aluminum.

However, it is worth noting that 9to5 Mac is much more credible than ThinkSecret in recent times.
