Hypothetically, say I installed Windows XP on a desktop pc machine. I then buy Parallels and install Parallels on my Macbook. Can I use the same windows xp installation cd on my Macbook? Can Microsoft detect the same "version" of Windows on two machines?
-
wouldnt that be illegal or something??Im not sure, but i think u can use the windows cd only once..
-
It is one license for one PC. If it is an OEM version the license is even more stringent.
-
this is an interesting topic since one of the microsoft reps told me that "technically" you can install their windows/office on two pc's that you own...i.e.a desktop and a laptop...except i somehow didn't believe him...i bought the retail version of win xp sp2 and installed them on two machines (laptop and desktop) and it worked fine with just the same key....i couldn't find anything in the licencing agreement that backed his claims either...but it also doesn't explain why i could install the same software using the same key on two different machines...

I have had the same OEM license I have used for years. I have used it over and over no problems I tear down and rebuild my computers alot I do have to call them to activate I just tell I have changed configuration of my PC and no problem.
-
Also licenses are not for a single disk what I mean is I have 3 XP Home OEM licenses and 1 disk they all work on the same disk. But I can't use my MC2005 key with that disk the keys have to match the edition.
-
of course it is possible! Do you think that everyone has got a unique cdkey? Many many people has got an illegal copy of windows xp, how do you think it would be possible to have so many illegal copies of windows xp?
-
Is it possible to install the regular OEM version of Windows XP Home in the macbook? I´ve read something about the need of SP2, does this version have it?
This would increase a lot the probability of me buying a macbook, since it´s a lot cheaper. -
Parallels doesn't care about which version of XP you have, unlike Bootcamp. Besides, I suppose if you have a OEM XP CD without SP2, you can slipstream it in - just google for how to do it.
-
What about Bootcamp?
-
Bootcamp needs XPSP2 or it will refuse to install. To my best knowledge, you can still slipstream it on a previous OEM CD and it should work, but I haven't tested it myself.

1.1 Installation and use. You may install, use, access, display and run one copy of the Software on a single computer, such as a workstation, terminal or other device ("Workstation Computer"). The Software may not be used by more than one processor at any one time on any single Workstation Computer.
Right from the XP Home EULA. I would assume Pro and OEM are very similar. This means in order to do what you want, it would require you to break the EULA, and therefore has no place on this forum.
