I just got a Macbook Pro 15" 2.4GHZ about 1 week ago. So far the machine is great. My only worry is I am seeing tons of posts about the Nvidia issues everywhere. Is this on all the machines with the nvidia 8400-8600 series cards or only certain revisions etc. I just spent 2k on a laptop "most I have ever" and wanna make sure its going to be a good investment. I no we can't see in to the future just looking for some input.

    Thanks

You've got a basic one year warranty with Apple and the option to buy AppleCare and extend that to 3.

If something happens within this amount of time, Apple will take care of it regardless of if it's a video card issue, or your Superdrive stops working.

I wouldn't worry about it too much unless your machine starts acting up.

I don't believe the NVIDIA issue is a huge deal, it is not a good thing but I don't expect notebooks dying in a year as being any widespread case. At least, it has been a year of NVIDIA 8600M GT MBPs and I haven't heard any widespread failures yet. If it becomes a huge issue I do expect NVIDIA, Apple and all major manufacturers to adequately address the problem by extending warranties or recalls.

my g1s with 8600m gt is still running great; I have yet to see evidence that the cards are bad honestly.

Uhh, I guess you havn't checked the apple discussion boards, or maybe it wasn't enough people to say it was widespread. But yea, way back when, before we knew about faulty video cards, we had no idea why the cards would die. But they did, and the only replacement was new logic boards.

I don't wanna sound like im trying to scare you with the new laptop purchase, but I gamed a lot with my MBP and the gpu died within the first year. So apple replaced it free of charge, but it scared me enough to get apple care.

If you're REALLY REALLY worried about it, I'd say wait a couple of months ad see if they do anything different with the MBP refresh. Maybe they'll switch to ati, but hopefully they just get a better card thats not faulty.

The discussion forums account for a very small percentage of people, really. Apple's selling more than 2 million Macs a quarter, so about 8-9 million a year. Usually, only users with problems sign up for forums, to solve their problems; most that don't have issues don't want to bother and go on with their busy lives. So even if an issue affected 1% of all Macs sold, that would be 80'000 Macs with that defect. Suppose 10% of those people made a thread in the forums. That is 8000 threads of a particular issue, which will feel very widespread. But looking at the numbers, that really was only 1% of all Macs sold.

So I'm not saying the issue isn't widespread, but discussion forums alone, I don't believe is any accurate way of saying is widespread or not.

    Just my take! :)

You should be fine unless your MBP stops functioning properly. If anything weird starts happening then i would take it to a Genius and let them take a look at it and the worst they could say is there isnt anything wrong with it. So i hope that helps!

As the prior issue stated the reason the GPU breaks down is from the GPU heating up and cooling down "MANY" times. So unless you work the GPU on and off consistently their should not be an issue. Opt for warranty though as it's still a "defect" and could potentially cause you more grief then it's worth.

I've OC'ed since day 1 with mine and haven't experienced a single issue. I wouldn't worry about it.
