Is it worth it to purchase the 3 year protection plan for a powerbook??? It's pretty expensive.
    Thanx

I would agree it's probably not necessary. I travel with my laptop for work, and I got the 3 year extended warranty for one of the 8 Apple laptops I've owned. I only had one problem outside of the warranty that worried me, (bad LCD), and even so Apple offered me a 199.00 flat fee repair for it then.

I was told that you can buy the extended warranty anytime during the original warranty period, but you should have someone officially verify that for you. (Like call an Apple store, or Apple support directly)

To answer your question, yes you can buy it within the first year, however you must realize that you will get two more years on top of the year which is included when you buy the laptop. If you buy it you must register it by phoning applecare up before the year is up.

I am going to say its worth it, you can phone up for technical support, and if you have a problem with you hardware then they fix it, they were very nice when my dvd drive jammed and fixed the problem very fast.

Besides extending your warranty from 1 year to 3 years, you also go from 90 days of free tech support to 3 years. Along with these benefits, you get a TechTool Deluxe CD from Micromat. This utility tests hardware components and repairs certain system conflicts for you. It's not fantastic, but it's alright.

I buy my AppleCare protection plans through Smalldog.com. Right now it is a fair amount cheaper. Just be sure to get a POWERBOOK plan. Here is the link to that item at Smalldog. http://www.smalldog.com/product/42901

    Hope this helps,
    Mike

P.S. I have owned several PowerBooks and many PowerMacs. While QC is pretty good with Apple products, it's still reassuring to have a good warranty. If you DO buy an extended warranty, go with AppleCare and stay away from 3rd party junk.

AppleCare covers pretty much everything, right?

The only reason why I would get applecare is for security knowing that if I drop any liquids, or break the computer in any physical way, apple will be right there to fix it for me.

I'm ordering my iBook next week, and I don't know if I should get applecare (well, i have a year to decide). I'll be taking it with my EVERYWHERE, so I just dont want it to break due to physical abuse and such.
