According to this Apple has future plans for some new MBP's, and there isn't really anything they can update to other then i5/i7's and maybe ATI. I think we might see these early next year.

I guess they wanted to give users the option of saving a few bucks and getting C2D. The i5 and i7 are available options on the new iMacs.

What a downgrade in GPU, if they do use the HD 45xx cards... that's pretty fail.

I don't think it would be fail if the 13" MBP had a 4570 in it.

Maybe they have to go 45xx for lower TDPs to match with i5 heat. It would be weird to downgrade, but the 4650 is 35watt, the current 9600m gt is 23watt, and the 4570 would be 15watt. Macs have always been lacking graphically anyway so maybe they plan to save power on a budget gpu to make room for a i5.

If they downgrade GPU then they are stupid. With all the programs out there that need GPU to work, then they would be killing themselves. I wouldn't but one if they did that. That is like taking a step backwards in screen resolution. Or HDD space...

What programs are you talking about that need GPUs to work?

The only programs that use GPUs are better off using workstation GPUs. The only major area where you would be concerned with a graphics card is when you're gaming.

Quite frankly you would never use the potential of your video card if you never game on your laptop. Anything discrete is better than integrated.

Maybe I don't really mind too much about the GPU as I don't game on my machine.

Well for one yes I do game. And my girlfriend is a graphics design major and from what I have heard that does take up alot of GPU. Along with video editing and whatnot. I could be wrong. I just know that I have my laptop as a jack of all trades. I game occasionally. I need something that will work good for whatever I want. Right now with the 9600 it works great. Change that to something lower and when it comes time to get a new computer, I'll be looking at a PC. No if and or buts about that.

I generally have a workstation and one or two laptops that are connected by Synergy so I can just move work to the workstation if an application is particularly resource intensive. I have a MacBook Pro 17 inch but I absolutely do not need the capabilities that the 8600 provides. I would be fine with Intel (or anyone else) integrated graphics. Some people want more but there are a ton of people that run fairly mundane applications on their laptops.
