    hi there,

i have my Apple Mac only four months. The other day I asked my husband to have a look at the Fn key as it wasn't pressing down properly and i couldn't delete. So he removed it and had a look at it. He wasn't sure what was wrong so he removed the cntrl button which unfortunately broke as the keys are extremely hard to remove.

So he realised the problem and fixed the Fn key. Today I'm having the same difficulty with the Shift key on the left hand side. The problem was the spring in the key. There is a small tab on the sides, and i had worked it self free of round plastic part of the key.

I think this has happened again now with the shift key.

Has anyone else had this problem? I had no problems for four months but now that's the second key in a week. Also I now have a broken Ctrl key. Have I any comeback with Apple? I just have the basic one year guarantee, I didn't buy any fancy stuff. I would like to get replacement Ctrl key and don't know here to get it.

But is this a common problem with Apple Mac Pro Books? If all the keys go like this, I'll go mad!

Can I email Apple and if so where? I bought in Germany.

    Thanks for any advice folks,

    one irritated new Apple Customer.

I don't think that is a common problem at all, I am around many MBP users in a studio and I have never seen keyboard keys ever being an issue.

you should definitely be able to get a replacement keyboard, give Apple a call or email to their customer care service, which should be on the Apple site, you should check the German site if you are in Germany.

also, if you have any Apple Stores near you, you can probably make an appoint ment and get the keyboard fixed very quickly.

    good luck!

Not a common problem? Lucky me! I bought an Apple so that I wouldn't have problems like this. Ah well, there's always one!

I'll definitely give them a ring and see what they say. I'm having trouble typing with capital letters now because of that shift key. It feels like it's stuck on one side.

Thanks for that feedback, Circa86! I was trying to find out how to contact them so I could order a replacement key but I'll give them a ring instead. Cheers turas

yes as long as you have had the machine less than a year you shouldn't have much trouble getting the keyboard replaced.

Okay, so after looking up new vocabulary for keyboard and keys and so on, I rang Apple. After getting disconnected from the first guy, I explained the problem again as best I could in my schrecklich German ...painful.

So all the guy did was make me turn off the machine, remove the battery and wait about 20 second before putting the battery and power back and turning on. Amazyingly enough the Shift key is now working properly. Now I asked how the heck he did that, in my pidgeon German and he did explain something about the SNC or S und C ...no idea!

Then he was doing the hard sell on the guarantee that you pay a lot of money for. Beginning to think that might not be a bad idea. My husband is excellent with computers, they are his passion. But he doesn't know the Mac system at all.

So no new keyboard for me yet. But if it happens again, I will be back onto them. I can't be removing all the power out of the system every week over a key not working. Das geht nicht!

Will look into these expensive after-care guarantees now. They seem like a lot money.

Okay this problem is occuring again. Function key is getting stuck halfway through the day and recovers sometimes overnight when I shut down the computer. If I put it to sleep, then the key doesn't recover.

Just to clarify, the function key feels like half of the spring underneath is undone. It happened to the Ctrl key too.

Will get onto Apple after my exams in Feb. Not a happy camper.

Seriously, am I the only person to experience this?

Just one key? Consider yourself fortunate :p . My keyboard and trackpad like to randomly die completely every few minutes (hey once a week isn't too bad now is it?) and I have to reset the pram to get them back. Looks like I wil have to send in my mbp a second time.... Considering I'm a CS major, this really a PITA to go ~ a week without my computer.

unfortunately I have not scene this happen in another MBP, but again, there is no reason Apple should not replace it.

and Chris27, Apple did release a keyboard update through software update and many people happily reported that fixed their issues, but it is possible you may just have a hardware failure.

it is unfortunate for both, but you just have to understand that nature of it all, and hope for the best.

The update didn't fix the problem. I also have the same problem under windows so I don't think it is a problem with mac OS X. Apple already replaced the whole upper panel including the keyboard and that didn't fix the problem (it showed up about two weeks later) so I'm not really sure what the problem is.

huh, that is very odd, but I wish you good luck in getting the problem resolved, hopefully it isn't something that requires a lot of downtime.

but you might try giving Apple a call at the 1 800 SOS APPLE number and let them know that you are a CS major, can't afford downtime, and have already had it replaced once, and see what they say, (note: make sure the "O" in SOS is actuall an "O" and not a zero, because the later leads to a *** chat hotline I believe, haha)

Man, that does suck. Well thanks for posting. I do feel a bit more reasonable about one key now. It was just as I said. Part of the reason I spent nearly twice the amount on a new laptop was to buy a better standard or a better name so I would not encounter problems such as this.

But I feel for you... I too will have to hold off for now. Maybe I missed that software update mentioned.
