I am installing the oem version of vista home premium 64 bit on my brand new macbook pro. I use bootcamp assistant to create a 60gig partition, insert my vista cd to start the install, use advanced options to let vista convert format to ntfs.
I followed the steps/guide exactly and everything goes fine. The system goes through installation but when does its first reboot and comes back to the install screen it errors on the step that says completing installation. It remains on the completing installation step for a few minutes and then an error comes up the says "Windows cannot configure one or more system components. To install windows restart the computer and restart the installation."
Any idea? I am at a complete loss as to what to do. I have searched and found nothing that will help with this error on a mac.
thanks
william

Um... I'm pretty sure 64-bit Vista is not supported by Apple.

I have tried it 3 times. Just keep doing the same thing and hopefully it will work? Could something be wrong with my cd? I have an oem version from new egg. I will try it again tonight and see what happens.
In your sig your macbook pro specs are the same as mine. have you put 64 bit vista on yours? -

umm, i am preety sure that bootcamp doesn't support OEM discs

Do you know if your Vista disc has SP1 already on it? That might be an issue since it's a 64-bit disc and I vaguely remember that 64-bit support is only really provided on the Mac Pro desktop.
-
where did you see that? it is the exact same thing as the retail disc you just dont get the box and documentation. it does have sp1 already installed and 64 vista is supported on late 2008 macbook pros.

you can go to your local apple store and ask them to install the OS.

I just tried to install windows xp home with sp2. I went through the steps, it rebooted and hung at the screen that says "Setup will complete in approximately 39 minutes". After a while it errored out saying:
"An error has been encountered that prevents set up from continuing. One of the components that windows needs to continue setupu could not be installed. Data error (cyclic redundancy check).
If you are instaling from a cd, there might be a problem with the disc, try cleaning the disc or using another disc. Press OK to view set up log file."
When I press OK I see this:
Error: SXS.DLL: Syntax error in manifest or policy file D:\I386\asms\10\msft\windows\gdiplus\gdiplus.man" on line 4
Error: Installation failed: D"\I386\asms. Error message: data error (cyclic redundancy check)
Wow, any ideas? something wrong with my new macbook? i have two bad discs? I'm clueless. -
yes,they should help you!

I contacted both apple and microsfot about the issue. The apple tech thought that vista 64 bit with sp1 wasn't compatible and that I should use vista 64 bit without sp1. He thought that maybe something occured when I attemped vista with sp1 that messed up the xp install. He had me reinstall OS X and try again with xp wich I did. Same error.
Microsoft had me read the entire error and setup log file to them. He said the "asms" error was due to faulty disc or optical drive. I am going to replace the disk and try xp w/sp2 or v32 bit vista one more time to see what happens. -
The cyclic redundancy check error that you're seeing with Windows XP means that it's unable to read from the disc, and the files cannot be copied. You're likely running into the same issue with Windows Vista, 64-bit Windows Vista with SP1 works fine on the new MacBook Pro so there's not an issue there, rather it's not copying everything from the disc or data is getting corrupted from the disc to the hard drive.
You could certainly try another Windows disc, or even a Linux Live-CD should suffice, just hold down the Option key and select the CD when it appears.
If this doesn't work, you may be looking at a faulty SuperDrive... don't get upset though, unfortunately it happens but if you take the computer into a Genius Bar (if you have one handy) or contact AppleCare and tell them that you're having issues with your SuperDrive and that your MacBook Pro is brand new, they should be able to arrange for repair (or, as the machine is so new, they may offer/you could suggest to get a replacement computer sent out if you feel that it would be more feasible in the long run).
Good luck. -
I just picked up another windows xp home disc. I am going to try it and see what happens. Hopefully it is just a faulty disc. But that would be strange to have two right? LOL. I don't know.
I'm not upset though, I understand things happen. I truly and loving this laptop, I just need to get the bootcamp feature working and I'll be in heaven. -
A few questions:
1. What happens if you try burning a CD or DVD from within Mac OS X?
2. If you open System Profiler, and click on Disc Burning under Hardware, what type of drive is listed? -

Well, I exchanged my retail version of XP for a new disc and attempted the install again. Everything worked perfectly. So far so good.
Still not sure why Vista 64 didn't work. XP Home is working fine.
