White Macbook late 2006 Core duo CPU

So forgive my ignorance as i am more a Windows user but in OSX (Tiger 10.4) You hold down the option key while powering on to select your bootable drive. The internal DVD drive in this macbook is broken (and too old to warrant replacing) So i have an external USB ASUS DVD drive i wanted to boot from to install Leopard. However when i hold down Option only the Mac Hard Drive shows up as a bootable device....What exactly am i doing wrong?
