I am making a 10 minute or so powerpoint presentation that will include pictures, music, video, and sound effects in Office mac 2008, on my macbook.

Once I am finished, I will save it onto a USB key. Lets say I now bring the USB key and open the powerpoint in the lecture hall at my school, will the videos and sound effects still work? I know that the pictures will, but not sure about other media content like video and sound effects.

Would it be better to do this in Office 2007 in Windows?

Also, aside from the compatability question(s), watch your music/video links...

You have to make sure that the music/videos are embedded into your presentation. If not, make sure they are on your usb key and they are linked properly to their location.

If you linked an mp3 from a folder on your computer to play with the presentation and you play it on a different computer, it's not going to point to the mp3 file any longer...well, it will point to it, but the folder/file won't be there because they were on your computer.

I would suggest playing your presentation on another computer, if possible, before "show time"...then adjust accordingly.

    Hope this helps...

There is no way to embed video and audio into the powerpoint file... so the best thing is to export the whole thing as a package... I would do this as a office 97-2004 format too as most other pc/mac's are still running older versions. This will create a folder with all the video files and audio files in it.
All the links should be ok, but its possible that they may get broken, so its best to test the presentation on the target machine quickly before you start.
Normally powerpoint will shoot you an error message when you first open the presentation saying it can't find the links and ask if you want to locate them manually.

The school computer has Office 2007, I guess I'd have to use Office 2007 then.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean Underpantman to export the whole thing as a package. Even if I exported all the sound effects and movies into a file, wouldn't I then need to re-integrate them into the slide show so that it will recognize where they are?

Go to save as> in the pull down menu for type choose powerpoint package.

This will save everything in a folder ... that way you can just drag the folder to your usb key, and all the video audio files needed + the ppt file will be there.

07 and 08 both use pptx files so there is no reason to used 07... 08 works great, I have given a lot of presentations on old PC's running xyz versions of office, and for the most part its all goes smoothly.
    Oh but one thing.
Change the default font to something else like Arial ... this is the one thing that gets screwy as PCs don't usually have that calibri font

Thanks a lot for the tip that will make transferring the media a lot easier.

My other question though, is when I transfer the pptx file and the file containing audi visual files to the desktop of the computer in the lecture hall, will I need to re-integrate them into the slideshow?

Or will the pptx file automatically link each sound/video to that file containing the audio visual stuff on the desktop?
