Create a .ppt presentation? You will need Microsoft Office:Mac. You can create slideshow presentations in other formats using various other programs, but you will need Microsoft Powerpoint for .ppt.

As a free alternative, you can try open office. It can create presentations (with some real nice themes) and save it as a .ppt file.

There's also Neo Office. It was just released, and is a better mac port of Open Office.

Well, as RadcomTxx said, there's Apple's application called "Keynote", part of the iWork suite. It does a great job but I think the next Powerpoint will be better (Powerpoint 2008)

And as above posters said, there's NeoOffice, which is the Mac equivalent of OpenOffice (you can also run OpenOffice on Mac, but you need x11) which is a good free alternative to Powerpoint.

And to answer the original poster's question, yes there is Powerpoint. Microsoft also has an Office suite for Mac, called, frankly, Microsoft Office for Mac. The current version is Office for Mac 2004, which is the equivalent to Office 2003 Windows. The next release is Microsoft Office for Mac 2008, which will be the equivalent to Office 2007 for Mac. And it is scheduled to be released this year, not in 2008 contrary to the name.

I would not bother with the current Office 2004 for Mac because it requires you to run it in an emulator mode. Use NeoOffice or Keynote as others have suggested. I would wait until Office 2008 comes out for the Mac.

Also take into account the pricing:
    MS Office - expensive.
iWork - cheap, but still costs money
    NeoOffice - free!

I haven't actually tried NeoOffice, but I have tried OpenOffice and iWork and MS Office for Mac - Keynote would be my favourite for presentations, while OpenOffice would be for the other office stuff.

I have a colleague that is a big fan of open office. I am sticking with Word mostly because I send document around a lot by email, and I worry about conversion issues.

I've never run into that problem.

But generally, I make my PP in Keynote, then port them to power point (you can save it as a power point slide).

Hollownail, can you explain that in more detail? This would be a big deal to me as I do powerpoint presentations but would not always want to carry my notebook with me. If I save the presentation on a thumb drive, can I play it on any computer, mac or windows? Thanks.
