I'm considering a Powerbook and I have heard that you can install Windows XP on the notebook.

    Is that true?

Or is it the Powerbook can run Windows programs?

You can with Virtual PC, but it is slaw. When the new Intel Macs are released, I would think it will do both.

    How slow?

Can it run Word documents in Windows XP via Virtual PC?

    What about AVI files?

You would be able to handle word easily enough, but anything with greater graphics use will really slow down as VPC emulates a graphics cpu. Which i think is because windows handles graphics so much differently.

I have been looking at the iBook as well.

Can the iBook run Windows XP via Virtual PC?

On the Mac X OS, the file video formats that I want to run is AVI, RM, and MKV. Does Apple have its own video decoders like FFShow?

If you want to run Windows on the Mac you are probably better off waiting for the Intel based ones.

I don't understand why you'd need to run Windows to look at Word documents and AVI files anyways. Quicktime can play AVIs, and OpenOffice.org can do everything Word can do and more, including view/save .doc files.

I'd try OpenOffice first as it is free.

There is a Mac version of Office. VPC 7 has sped things up quite a bit if you use emulation mode. Both run on iBook or PB, or any current Mac.

I am inclined to agree with the suggestion to wait until the Intel Macs are introduced.

The San Francisco Expo is in mid January. Steve Jobs is keynoting. I would definitely wait until that time if at all possible.

    Good luck with your purchase.
