I was talking to a friend that does not have the best eye sight, and they were trying to pick between the macbook pro 13 and the macbook air 13.

Use will be web browsing and email mainly. Durability is the biggest concern as they are a heavy user and it will be opened a million times a day.

The person wants the air, but is concerned it may be harder to read on since there are more pixels in the same area. Is this a concern, or would new glasses be the suggestion? (I have never worn glasses as I have 20/20.)

Does using browser zoom work well enough to eliminate any concern? (Closest apple store is about 3 hours away.)

    Thanks!

Browser zoom works pretty well, just consider that images will not look as crisp since very few are vector based on the web. Personally I don't enjoy it zoomed in due to the image distortion.

He might consider something like a Lenovo X1 which has a 1366x768 resolution.

I also have 20/20 so I'm not really sure about recommending glasses for computer use.

One can also adjust the screen resolution to make everything larger for eyesight issues, at the expense of slightly softer icons and everything else.

Depending on the type of vision issue they have, this may be sufficient if they simply have higher near or far-sighted problems. If they have a visual acuity problem due to macular degeneration or other chronic/serious problem, then screen res and browser zoom won't solve the issue.

There is rumors that the macbook air refresh could be 1-3 months away... But their computer is going down fast, so I hate to advise them to wait... The wifi only stays connected 1/2 the time, and I think a fan is dead or dying because it always runs really hot... And the cd drive doesnt work...

I know they wear pretty strong prescription glasses all the time.. They may or may not be current.

i would definitely go for the pro, i have just returned my air as text was to small, everything seems zoomed out and there is no permanent effective fix. the pro has bigger and bolder and darker text and is much easier to read, the screen also seems much more colourful and vibrant. the air gave me eye strain after only short periods of using it, so for me lower resolution is better.

There is always something "just around the corner"--but with the MacBook Air, timing is definitely up in the air (har har) because Intel has postponed the release of Ivy Bridge, at least for notebooks (as opposed to desktops). I'd get what they want now.

Instead of adjusting resolution on a MBA, couldn't you just increase the size of the icons and text? I thought there were settings that do that, though my Apple is at home and I'm at work.

you can set the minimum size font in settings amongst other things but nothing looked quite right because it was only adjusting text, it just didn't look the same as my original air that has the 1280 x 800 resolution which is the same as the pro. i did a lot research on the internet and there isn't a satisfactory permanent fix for it, apple obviously thinks higher resolution equals smaller everything, which is a good thing if you have very good eyesight because you can fit more info on the screen with the higher resolution screen because everything is looks zoomed out.

The Air is better because of the matte display and the screen resolution. It is also lightweight, which makes it easier to carry when reading :)

The Air's display is not true matte. It has less glare than the Pro, but it's not the same as the 15- and 17-inch models' optional matte display. Heck, even Apple calls it "glossy".

Further, high resolution is not optimal for someone who has bad eyesight. The standard 1440x900 screen on the 15-inch model is about perfect for how I use my MBP, and I am very nearsighted. I wish Apple had a matte option at this resolution.

Which has absolutely nothing to do with the topic at hand.

I would get mbp, also dont have best eye-sight.
Not because you cant find workaround (like cmd+ np) but because its more convenient. And also more durable.

I am sure you can increase the size of the desktop icons, I guess it is the web browsing text that concerns me. But I was not sure if that should concern me because I hear that you can zoom in with gestures, and I am pretty sure it will maintain between websites.
