When I try to start Windows from my Bootcamp partition via parallels it says that I need to re-register my copy of Windows because my system configuration has changed too much. Is there any way to get around this?

None that I know of. Just re-register. In the worst case just call up Microsoft and use the over-the-phone registration bot.

I am under the impression that XP installs have a limited number of registrations. I don't want to waste two on one install of windows.

You can activate Windows XP online for about 3 times, before you have to call up Microsoft and activate via the over-the-phone registration bot, which will ask you some no-brainer questions like: 'Did you obtain your version of Windows XP from websites such as www.FREEXPLICENCESHERE.com or www.fReEwInDoWs4AlL.com?'
