So I have an HP dv3t (13" model) notebook running Windows 7. For about a year it ran great until I started noticing overheating issues to the point where it would power off instantly.

After a month of dodging phone calls to HP's tech and warranty departments, I am getting my warranty updated so it can be serviced. (I was given an insert saying I have a 2 year warranty when the database HP had said only 1).

So I want to try something new. After this machine gets fixed I will deal with it at least till next summer when my warranty does expire. I was thinking of forking out some extra cash from working this summer on a MBP along with next year's iPod rebate program so at the same time it would be an upgrade from my 2nd Gen Touch to a 4th Gen. Do you think this is a good idea?

if you want/need a Mac and/or OSX... sure... but if the purchase is that far away, you'd probably want to wait closer to time and then decide, as things change in computers quickly.

if the DV3 starts overheating again, blow out the fan and lint, they are bad for holding dust bunnies in the mini radiator just infront of the fan assembly

Unless you need a new iPod, the MBP's they have in the refurb store are much cheaper yet carry the same warranty.

I think it's a good idea.......have done the same thing myself (see the siggy) and wouldn't trade my 13" for anything.

As far as waiting is concerned........if this is going to be a secondary notebook and you're not too concerned with specs/technology, then go ahead and buy one when you got the money.

Regardless of that though, make sure to consider intended use and price...(if a MBP will be just a gen. purpose machine, then specs shouldn't be as important and you can probably afford to go with a current/last gen model.....if you have more specialized uses in mind, then waiting for what's around the corner might be advisable).
