Well, today I woke up to an Apple Care box being thrown at me, which I can't say I'm exactly mad about. But thing is, before I open it I'd like to know if I need the original reciept of my MBP to activate it or bring it in for repair?

I recently called a repair place and they told me to bring my Mac in WITH the reciept... which I don't have with me right now, since I wasn't the one who physically bought it. However on Apples site it tells me the info about my warranty as long as I have my serial number.

Just want to be sure before I open this thing up. :) thanks.

If you're shipping it to apple, then they have your apple care on file. It's all relative to the serial number on your computer, and your personal file in their database.

You're a-okay to send it in.

Thanks system_159. But darn it, I wanted to avoid going to Apple since it'll take bloody long with them :p But oh well, guess I'll make an appointment and deal with *shudder* Vista for a week.

Vista isn't so bad actually. I had to send my Macbook to Apple once to get the casing replaced. During that time I used my good old Asus running Vista, and it was surprisingly pleasant. Of course, Vista was not as friendly or easy to use as OS X, but it was much better than I had predicted it would be.

Just thought I'd write that to ease your shudder a bit.

If you know what the problem is(or have a general idea), you don't have to make an appointment. You can just call apple and have them send you a box to send it out in. All repair shipments are overnight, so it should take the time of repair plus two days.

btw, what is the issue that's causing all this fuss?

The left speakers cover is not flush with the seam, backlight is making a low buzzing sound, and the screen has like... a darkened line at the bottom of it. Sort of looks like the backlight is weaker in that certain spot. That's the main issue. I need to screen to be flawless on this thing.

I recently activated an applecare package for my MBP and it said on one of the stages online that I need to keep my original sales receipt as a proof of purchase date. So the receipt is required still I think.

Well I registered and yes, it says at the end to keep the receipts in case any question arises saying that it's not eligible for service, but it even says all my info on my profile... so I doubt I'd need it. Oh man if I need it and the person who bought it doesn't have it anymore I'm in a bit of trouble :D

I recently sent my Wii into Nintendo though, and the process was kind of the same: they asked when I bought it and my serial number, and that's all that mattered. I doubt Apple would give me any problems.

For service, you will need your original receipt if the service provider is doing their job properly. To register the AppleCare Protection Plan you don't - that's just a matter of calling Apple with your serial number and the APP code in hand - as you just noticed, I see.

I'd suggest chasing down the receipt if you can, never know when it might come in handy. You might get away without it (it all depends on the service provider really), but I wouldn't count on it.

I just took my MBP in for a screen replacement at the Apple Store and no receipt was needed. Maybe an authorized repair center would, but honestly if you have an Apple Store, go there. Mine was repaired in 2 days.

Thanks Cashmonee, that's just the answer I was looking for (first hand experience with a repair). Well, ya I was going to go to the Apple store to get it repaired since the non-Apple repair center wanted a receipt. I also asked the store who sold the person the MBP and they said as long as it's showing up on their database all I had to do was bring it in to any Apple Store.

Yep, I got the same deal when I took my MBP for battery-related issues today. Everything is on computer's these days, and Apple store's warranty information based on the serial number of the computers.

Funny side-note: When I took my MBP in today they couldn't reproduce the problem I had with my battery. It wouldn't power on off the battery, but could power on when plugged in to the charger. None-the-less, the Apple genius offerred to perform in-depth diagnosis on it within a couple days.
