So for those who haven't upgraded to Office 2008, and using Tiger, and aren't planning to, you'll notice that a lot of the documents these days are saved as " ___.docx".

In office 2004, there isn't actual way to view them, and believe me, I've tried many. :p

However, recently I found a really reliable site to convert them to .doc's for you, free of charge:
    http://www.zamzar.com

All you need to supply them is an email for them to send the converted document to.

It has been VERY useful, and it doesn't only just convert .docx's, but image formats, music formats, even video formats.

    :) Just thought I'd share...

I think you can open .docx format with "Preview" in Leopard... =)

That's nice but that means that they can see your personal files.

I just typed a .docx file up in Word 2008 and tried to open it in Preview, Preview won't even recognize the file.

Is there some reason why you don't use the Open XML file convertor that Microsoft provides for Office 2004 and v. X? It's still in beta and with Office 2008, I doubt it'll ever get out of beta, but the convertor was last updated last month which is pretty recent considering the pace that Remote Desktop Connection development is going.

TextEdit opens .docx files just fine too, as does NeoOffice - though both have problems with formatting.

leopard opens docx files natively. also, office 2008 and iwork08 can also open docx files. highly recommend either.

Right... it was TextEdit that opens the .docx files, not Preview!
    My bad :p

I'm sure this site will be fine for converting docx into doc, but it's not good for audio conversion. My 192kbps audio file went down to like a 64kbps file when i converted it.
