Are there any decent 2D/basic 3D RPG games out there which will run natively on the intel macbook?

The reason I'm asking is that I travel a fair bit and a 2D rpg would be great for long journeys/boring evenings in hotels. I have seen a few of the older ones such as Diablo 2 but I can't get it to run, presumably because it's geared up for an old mac. I would guess I'd have the same problem with most of the older mac games?

I looked at installing Bootcamp then install a PC version... but my copy of XP Pro is SP1 and according to the Bootcamp support pages that won't work.

    Any recommendations?

You could always grab a couple of emulators as long as you own the original copies of whatever games you want to download and play. The SNES and Genesis both had a nice collection of really good turn-based and action-RPGs.

I'll also suggest getting some emulators. It's not illegal if you own the original copy (or we can just pretend ).
You can play all the good ol' games: the NES and SNES Final Fantasy games, Chrono Trigger, etc.

Well you have a copy of Windows XP SP1 with the CD-Key? I'm wondering if your CD-Key would work to install XP SP2? You could just find someone who owns Windows XP SP2 (or download it) and try installing it using your CD-Key, it might work (does someone know?)

If you manage to install windows XP on your MAC, then you have a lot more games to choose from! Like other said, Diablo II would be great. If you like Diablo you can also try Titan Quest (same type of game).

I tried Diablo2 but couldn't get it to work unfortunately.. it said it wouldn't run on my system.. (can't remember exact error message and I'm at work so can't check!) it's a shame as it was one I wanted to try!

Thing is I have OEM XP SP1 disk plus official Microsoft SP2 patch disk but in Bootcamp support it says you can't change disk whilst installing so I'm not sure I could get round it with that. I'll have to ask around to see if I can borrow an XP SP2 disk and see if it works with my serial, I'd be surprised if it did to be honest!

The emulators option sounds good.. I do have some PS2/PS1/Xbox/SNES games still so might give that a try.

I'll check out Titan Quest too..

thanks for all the tips so far!

To be fair, Diablo II is also Mac-native (as Blizzard is one of the companies who fully supports the Mac versions of their games as well).

Have you tried downloading the latest Diablo II stuff from Blizzard? I'm pretty sure they've released updates to get it to work fine on OS X now.

If you have the full retail version of WinXP, you should be able to obtain a cd with all the SP2 updates. Now I'm not positive on the process, but I found a curious word.. "slipstream" which led me to this http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sp2_slipstream.asp Some how or another you have to use both the original disk, and the update together. Your sp1 key is morphed when you update to sp2 if I remember correctly so your sp1 key won't work on it's own with something like an SP2 OEM disk.

For Diablo II on OS X:

    http://us.blizzard.com/support/article.xml?articleId=20758

Download the Macintosh OS X Native Installer mentioned on that page, and apply the patches.

That native installer is what you'll need though (you mentioned not being able to install it properly, which would be because the Diablo II disks wouldn't have been OS X native at the time).

Come on peoples, at least recommend the genre that Diablo and Diablo II were based off: roguelikes. Low system requirements, incredible gameplay depth, and ported to OS X.

I believe that Blizzard games are only PC and Mac compatible on the same disc in the US. In Europe I think they sell separate versions.

They're running an "October Sadness" sale now. Games are 10% off (about $22.50 a game). :)
