    I love the new macbook pro. Look for student discounts, it can save you a few bucks. 200 or so, then another 100 off the warranty.

    The new MBP are very nice. Still I would be hard pressed to buy one over one of the old refurbs right now. $1449 for the old model is a steal. Although it looks like they are selling fast.

    I bought the old Macbook about 14 days ago so I paid restocking and swapped for the new one. It was a no-brainer to get 10% faster CPU, bigger HDD and double the RAM. I was sorry I didn't get multitouch, though. I purchased the new machine last night along with a 3 foot firewire cable. I started up the new machine and held t while rebooting the old one and voila. Brain transplant complete. I belt sanded (zeroed out not multiwrite) the old hard disk and reinstalled Leopard. It turns out that was the longest part of the brain transplant. Now I'm down to one new Macbook that's noticeably faster then my "old" new Macbook. I had already been to Crucial to check on RAM and 4 gig would have cost me $113. I don't feel so compelled to upgrade now that I have 2 gig.

    I spent some time with the Pro today in the Apple store. I really like the new touchpad support for pinch and rotate gestures but looking at the other features, I'm not quite sold on the Pro...

    Macbook (mid): 160 gig, 2 gig, 2.4 Ghz, superdrive, Intel GPU $1299
    Pro (base): 250gig, 2 gig, 2.4 Ghz, superdrive, Nvidia GPU $1999

    The keyboard on the Pro reminds me of my old Dell. I like the "feel" of the Macbook keyboard better. The weight of the Pro is a bit of a deterrent as well.

    Then there's the wattage issue...
    Macbook Air: 45w
    Macbook: 65w
    Macbook Pro: 85w
    Mac Mini: 110w
    Based solely on the size of the "brick", the Macbook seems like a good compromise in power consumption as well. I wish that cooler Intel chipset was ready now as I like things that use less power.

    OTOH if the Pro was $1499, I'd have one already.

    Very little weight difference for it to even be a factor, yeah.

    Macbook = 5 pounds
    Macbook Pro = 5.4 pounds
