Well that's unfotunate, but it's not a whole year delay. They said it would be ready by Macworld '08 which starts January 14 so it's only about a 5 and a half months from now.

I tried neo office, found it to be slower and more cumbersome then office 2004.
Furthermore i need to use endnote for my work, & it is tied to office, thus for me I'm stuck with office.

bollocks. oh well. coincidentially I installed iwork 06 yesterday and am starting to like it, so maybe microsoft can delay office all they want. I have 2007 installed through boot camp.

Is there anywhere online where you can pay and DOWNLOAD office 2004 student/teacher edition?

It is annoying. Luckily my school does have Office 2007 for nearly free, so I guess I'll just invest in VMWare Fusion.

Is Pages worth trying out instead of Microsoft Word? I only need to write essays. I need to be able to adjust margins, double space text, and the most important spell check.

You can do that with any text editor, such as TextEdit, which comes with OS X.

As Taelrak said, Pages will do that as will any text editor. I would stay away from Pages just because Word is the standard by default, and if you ever have to collaborate you will want maximum compatibility. Until then, I would stick with either a good text editor or NeoOffice to get by until January. The good news is that it is only 5 months away, and at least now we have a solid date.

I wonder if it will now be called office 2009?
    a
    :)

as for running office thru XP, that in my book is no different to using rosetta. Its all emulation in the end, me want universal.

Hmm, easy answer but complicated solution. You can't just say, "Simply install Windows and buy Office 2007". That whole venture is expensive and not everyone wants to use Windows.

who would have thought Microsoft Office 2008 would be released in 2008? what a crazy situation . . . yeah.

and it is August by the way.

buy Office 2004, and realize you don't really have any reason to upgrade to 08 at all because you really don't use Word for that much.

Eh? I use Word for tons of things (in fact I use Word, NeoOffice Write, OpenOffice Write, and WordPerfect depending on where I am and what computer or OS I'm on) :p

It makes as much sense to buy Office 2004 now as it does to buy Office 2003 for Windows, which is to say very little :(. That'd be like buying OSX Panther right now when Tiger's already out and Leopard's just around the corner. If I'm going to put up with a slow emulated program anyway, I'd rather just put up with Office 2007 for a few mionths via VMWare Fusion instead and grab Office 2008 next year.

I was actually really looking forward to Office 2008 (although the lack of VBA was making me hesitate).

Y'know, I had a feeling that Office 2008 wouldn't make it in time (hint hint: Microsoft ;)) :p. But really, I'm stuck on NeoOffice and Google Docs for a longer time now.

Well, seeing that the new version won't be here until next year may disappoint a few people we still must keep in mind that we have to PAY for it when it gets here. NeoOffice to the rescue! It may be slower but unless you need MS office for a specific reason, free vs. $400+.....The first option sounds better right now.
