I got this machine about 6 months ago, and all of a sudden it has started to make a very unnerving sound during startup. The left fan makes like a brief startup sound that is similar to a a fan hitting a piece of paper, for one second.
It quickly ends once the startup sound of the Super Drive begins and never occurs again once its started up.

Is this the sign of a dying fan? Seems awfully earlier for such instances.

PS: I'm sure its not the hardrive because, upon restart where the fan does not change speed, there is absolutely no unnerving sound.

Thanks in advance for any comments and suggestions!

Get a can of compressed air and blow out the vent at the back, that's the first thing I would do.

A lot of dust can develop in 6 months.

    Thanks for the reply!

It seems it was only temporary as it slowly went away. However I'm going to look into clearing out the system!

That sound occurs seldomly with my system but I really think my system has a faulty fan due to its temperatures residing in the 90's (degrees celsius) when IDLING. So my advice to you is that even though the sound does not occur so often be sure to get a temperature monitoring application so that you can view your temperatures at all times. And whenever you feel that it is getting too high make a note of what you are doing and what temperature it is at. If you are getting progressively higher and higher temps throughout the lifetime of your machine you may want it to get checked out by Apple.
