How well will oblivion run natively on OSX on my laptop? And yes It is native to OSX. I will also install Oldblivion if necessary

    it's the GMA x3100

If it is native, then I would think it would be plug-play. I'm really not sure though, haven't even run a game in OS X yet.

Oh i am sure the install won't be a problem, but the gameplay is more important :p

I will absolutely be in heaven if I can get it to play in any way shape or form on my laptop

it will run but it will look like crap on a X3100
possibly at lowest resolution and lowest settings

To say that it will run like crap is an understatement. Besides the x3100 being crap for gaming, you are also saying you will play it on OSX, which has lower performance for games.

I used to have a santa rosa macbook pro 2.2ghz w/128mb 8600gt, it ran ok med-high settings @ 1280x800. You do the math.

oblivion is not native to osx.

you might be able to get it running with a hacked up stolen cider version, but that doesn't make it native to osx. cider games (or crossover, or wine) do take a serious performance hit. also, the x3100 is in no position to be running oblivion, even natively in windows, much less in osx.

i second masterchef341. oblivion is a graphics and processor intensive game and obviously won't run on the x3100 even if there was a version for the os x

Installed it, and I have just started playing it. I downloaded some texture mods too add fps, and it is playable fully. Not much lag either, I am really happy.

yeah i guess if you use the oldblivion mod you could get away with it.

looks pretty ugly, but at least it runs. still, you would be able to squeeze out a lot more performance if you installed windows via bootcamp.

The oldblivion would not work I heard, I just got a new ini file, and some texture mods. Runs at 18-25 fps, and is very playable. I don't care how bad it looks, as long as I can enjoy it :)

masterchief, I do not have the need for windows. I have been tweaking it, and am at about 20 fps currently. And I like oblivion more then starcraft :p

If oldblivion gets ported to mac, I will probably install it. For now I will enjoy tweaking to my hearts content (I have the original install backed up if I kill igt)

    it is a weak vga.

thats why i recommend windows and oldblivion. you can squeeze out more performance that way.

he is currently getting 20 fps.

running the game in windows will increase performance somewhat. running the game with the oldblivion mod will make the game look better than low quality and give a bit more performance. all in all you might be able to squeeze out an extra 10fps. maybe.

I installed a few texture mods, replaced the default ini and it looks really good compaired to the original screenshot. I even turned on bloom and didn't notice any fps drop whatsoever. I'll post an updated screenie soon.

I am very happy with it. I have bloom lighting on right now, and it doesn't seem to cause me to lose any fps :)

I also tweaked the ini so it uses more ram. It is very playable, I don't really care how it looks as long as it isnt distracting (alot of pop in)

Pretty basic textures on the models, but not bad considering! We tend to Ooooh and Aaaah at high-end graphics early on, but honestly after playing a RPG for a few hours, you are so engrossed in the story, missions, your character, etc, that you don't notice the graphics so much anymore. At least thats the way it is for me.

Exactly. I don't get much pop in or lag, and to top it off the graphics are pretty decent.

normally I'd point you over to the ibrain URL in my sig banner, we have hundreds of Windows™ games including Oblivion working in OSX, you just download the wrapper and put your game inside of it (it uses Cider/Crossover/Wine, Oblivion runs best on Cider)... but due to current financial issues, the website is not up...

here is what I'll do for ya, I'll put the wrapper I use up so you can download it.. the game is NOT included... you must supply the game yourself...

Download this link to the wrapper Oblivion Mac OS X Wrapper (game not included, 54mb)

You'll need your installed version of Oblivion from installing in Windows or something like Crossover... You will need to apply a NO CD patch, which are available all over the internet... which is usually just replacing the .exe with one that doesn't look for the disc... patch up Oblivion in Windows (even in VMware or Parallels is fine), and use the NO CD patch, so that its ready to run...

unzip the wrapper, and right click the .app and hit Show Package Contents

go to Contents/Resources/transgaming/c_drive/Program Files/, and drop your installed version of Oblivion, in its folder (still named Oblivion), inside that Program Files folder...

You can double click to run the app at this point, but make sure you have Bloom and HDR effects disabled in settings, they can mess things up.... other than that the game should work ok.

If you need to mess with or transfer saved games, it stores them in $USER/Library/Preferences/The Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion Preferences/p_drive/User/My Documents/My Games/Oblivion/saves

    EDIT:
oh i forgot.. there is some issues with sound, and other things... changes that need to be made in the Oblivion.ini files, like disabling music, cuz it makes pauses when music starts which is annoying when music changes all the time while trying to fight... and sometimes some things that collide with the floor will be extra loud...

best bet... after you run the game once, exit then go to $USER/Library/Preferences/The Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion Preferences/p_drive/User/My Documents/My Games/Oblivion/ and change out the Oblivion.ini it generated with this one Oblivion.ini... it has the best settings I've been able to get to work so that the mess ups are as little as possible.. but you will not have any in-game music... just sound effects. To keep the sound decent NEVER even OPEN the sound settings in Oblivion, or you'll need to replace your .ini again. To get the overpowering sounds the best, some of the volumes are manually turned up past 100%, with others really low, and if you even open the sound settings it will knock all the high ones back down to 100%, and not work nearly as good. Just control the volume from your normal Mac volume control.

Oh and if you want to run in a window, you can press CMD+Enter once the game is running.
