Hrm, so does anyone know of a VNC viewer that is activly being developed?
I haven't found any that are UB, except for Chicken of the VNC, but the last release was in January and that was as a beta.

That was high on my list when I just bought my Macbook. But since I could ssh and forward X apps from my linux machine, and after installing Parallels I could use Windows Remote Desktop, I kind of forgot about it. Have you tried Chicken of the VNC? VNC is quite an old codebase so even a beta version might be very stable.

Yeah, I'm considering using Chicken of the VNC. My only concern is that it's beta, and it looks like it's not being updated anymore.
But I'll probably be buying Paralells very soon, that way I can use windows remote desktop to use linux. I just didn't want to go through the hassle of needing to do that.

If you just need to use Linux, then why not forwarding the app via ssh? I don't get it.

blah. I can't get any GUI's to work in linux on parallels. That sucks.

When you say forward the app through SSH, you mean make VNC use SSH?
Thats what I'm looking at trying to do. I'd rather keep as much software on the mac side. But, I'll have to finish getting everything setup on my linux box and then try it out.

Try RealVNC. They have an enterprise version for OSX and the Viewer is free. I use RealVNC on my Windows Server and I am able to connect via the RealVNC client for OSX

Yeah, unfortunantly the RealVNC is not free. $50 is a bit much for this...
I need something free or almost free.

    But thanks for the info!

No quite what I mean. X-11 is network transparent by design, so you can run any (well, most) X-11 apps over the network without much hassle. Simply enable the option of forwarding your display (meaning your video/input combo, and its network location) and X will send it your way.

above is a screenshot of Konqueror running from my Mandriva 2006 Linux box, inside OS X. All I did as ssh into my linux machine (with -X option, to enable display forwarding) and then I ran Konqueror from the command line. Since it is free, it may be worth to take a look and see if it suits your needs. What did you mean by "can't run any GUI using Parallels" ?

Wow, thats sweet! I'll give that a try now that I should have some time to play with things.

I mean I can't start any GUI's in Parallels. I installed Mandriva, but it won't let me run KDE or Gnome. It fails initializing something or another. I believe it can't see the video card and refuses to run.

thats weird. It may be driver related. OTOH, I ran Ubuntu from the CD (image) and it ran fine (though quite slowly). If you'd care to post the exact error message you get perhaps I could help.

If you could get a linux distro to run smoothly under Parallels than using X-forwarding is even more straightforward; you could even open a login screen directly on the remote machine.

Wen I do startX, it satarts the load then gets to:
    Using vt 7
    (EE) No devices detected.

    Fatal server error:
    no screens found
XIO: fatal IO error 104 (connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0"
after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining.

thats all I get. I'll probably try fedora core 6 later.

BTW, it does start with the Mandriva splash screen, the one that says booting system. Then it comes up saying failed loading Xserver, please try reconfiguring.

I'll try a few different settings to see what I get.

nm, got it. had to set it ti vesa drivers, not ati drivers.

now, next problem is that i can't get it to come out of full screen mode >.<
I wonder if thats a problem with the 3036 release or not.

Yep, I was kinda thinking about that, either the resolution was set wrong or the driver. Possibly the inability of getting out of fullscreen is due to the keypresses not being recognized. I sometimes have to try more than once under WinXP as well; but since I use it with VirtueDesktops, I simply run Parallels on a desktop of its own so I rarely need to leave fullscreen.

Well, im gonna give VirtueDesktops a try. I think last time I looked at them, they didn't have a UB version.

Anyway, I've been trying to setup everything on my linux box and the only thing I can get to work is SSH. but I still cannot get it to launch a window or anything. I tried the VNC + GDM (more secure than plain VNC) and that won't work.

I got the NX server/client to work.

However, I just realized I don't think VNC will suit me. What I need is something that will let me log into my current session. I need to be able to remotely administer stuff like Azeurus and other running apps. If I'm not mistaken, VNC will only let me create a new session, and once I close VNC viewer on my laptop, then the session is over.
