My MBP was running just fine with 10.10.3, this weekend I decided to updated to 10.10.4 and now my machine has random unresponsiveness.

    Examples:
    • I'll be watching YouTube and the video will freeze but audio will continue to play, if I open up a new tab I get the spinner and then it will eventually open up, and the video will unfreeze.
    • If I try to quit a program it never fully quits, I have to go into Activity Monitor to force quit the program.
    • Opening up new apps takes a bit of time too (spinner for about 5-10 seconds) before the app opens.
I've already run verify and repair permissions on my disk utility, still haven't fixed it.

Anyone have any suggestions before I go through the process of a format and re-install?

After some more testing I encountered some more issues, such as the machine not wanting to restart or shutdown (lots of hard resets) followed by the Grey stop signs at boot.

After running diagnostic tool there are no errors with the memory. On the quick run I received an error with the SDD, nothing found on the extensive pass, re-ran the quick test and nothing found again.

Had an old 7200 2.5" drive lying around, so I made a Time Machine backup (which took forever) and I suspect that it was the SSD causing the problems. Installed the 7200 drive formatted, applied my TM backup and no more hangups.

I'm going to scorch earth the SSD today (repartition, free empty space, repartition again) and apply the TM backup again to see if the unresponsiveness occurs again. If that is the case, time to RMA the SSD, if not then I hope this was a one off monkey wrench issue.

Well scratch the scorch earth idea, during the free empty space part it was unable to add a temporary file and all further attempts at trying to erase the hard drive, empty free space, repartition, etc. was met with all sorts of errors, so it looks like it is RMA time with Kingston... hate doing these things.

it may be the new TRIM for non apple drives they added and did an update to with .4. I have reports of similar things including full system lockups and massive file corruption, data loss and very random behavior with Samsung 840 & 850's, and intel 535's on a couple of the apple forums.

see if you can squeeze on an older version if you have an installer and can get it partitioned.

I do have an installer of Yosemite (1.6.18) from May 11, 2015. Since I've probably got some time on the RMA process I can play around with it some more and do some drive swapping/juggling.

While I thought that 10.10.4 was indeed the trouble-maker, I'm not sure why that would have caused the issues with erasing the drive and deleting/creating a partition.

Well it seemed like a clean install to 10.10.3 looked promising. Then I migrated my applications/data (not computer settings/network) and encountered the same issue with the OS becoming unresponsive. Fortunately, I didn't have a lot on this computer (I've only had it for about a month).

So my next step this to do another round of fresh install of 10.10.3 and if it continues to look good will just have to re-install my apps 1 by 1... which there weren't a lot of (Chrome, Steam, GOG, Avast, and VLC).

If it turns up to be a software issue, it will be boggling my mind though on how it works perfectly on a 7200RPM drive and not the SSD.

    EDIT:
I do have to say I do like the fact that Apple allows me to run an OS off a USB drive so I can be formatting/installing the SSD hooked up to the SATA... it's a little bit slower but faster than swapping out the drives from the back panel.

Just going to say that at this point I do feel that the SSD is just bad... encountered a bunch of hangups during the install process. Just going to complete the RMA process before going any further on this.

Received my replacement SSD from Kingston yesterday, hopefully I'll have time on Thursday to format it and apply a TM backup to it and get it going again.

Replacement SSD installed and cloned from mechanical drive. Everything seems to be running 100% now so I do believe that the SSD was failing and the cause of all the issues mentioned in the original post. Will see how well this one does.

Will wait doing the Apple SSD terminal command in 10.10.4 as you scared the living hell out of me for now.
