I downloaded and installed the OS X Mavericks Developer Preview earlier and so far, so good. I haven't run into any major problems yet, but I also haven't been able to do any extensive testing. So far, the only app that won't run on Mavericks is Symantec Endpoint Security. However, as I got this through a service provided by the US Government and I also happen to know the chief of operations at TRADOC IMD, I may be able to find out if there is a beta available for either Symantec Endpoint Security or McAfee Enterprise. I have installed Microsoft Office 2011, various apps from the Mac App Store, and Google Chrome. I haven't tested any of the Office applications yet. The one app from the App Store that I tested was Raiden Legacy and that ran without problems. Google Chrome also runs just fine. As I test out Mavericks more, I will update on app compatibility issues and bugs in the software.

How different is it from lets say Mountain Lion? I could care less about facebook, twitter crap. All I have learned so far is that apps (apps or apple updates?) would be updated automatically (windows 8ish) and finder has new tabs & options, which are available through a program for current OS X users. In fact, I guess Apple delivered on that front as experts wanted the ability to do more with Finder as one of the things that apple should do this time around.

As far as space goes, I think that I am at that sweet spot where ML doesn't take that much space compared to Lion and start up is faster as well especially on an SSD. The only downside, especially if compared to Windows 7, is that longer than Lion shut down times on the current OS X.

What version of OpenGL and related extensions are supported?

So far, Mavericks doesn't seem too much different from Mountain Lion. The longer shut down times that accompanies Mountain Lion on an SSD carries over to Mavericks.

According to Apple's WWDC keynote, Mavericks supports up to OpenGL 4.1. Of course, the hardware has to support this version of OpenGL too.

Did you upgrade or do you have to clean install as part of the developer preview? Things improved for me in ML when I did a clean install instead of an upgrade from Lion.

I did a clean install of Mavericks. I never do upgrades from previous operating systems. Too many old bits of the previous operating system that can cause problems.

Disappointing. I was hoping they would finally speed that up; I definitely noticed that longer shut-down time.
