Well, first off I've done a Secure your OS X thread, as well as a few other threads involving how to make your OS X experience a bit more enjoyable.

However, I have not covered typical OS X maintenance duties, yes there are some involved in OS X.

Anyways, I've found a wonderful PDF guide for Average Mac users on how to successfully maintain your OS X environment.

    http://www.geocities.com/americanb0i/os_x_maintenance.pdf

Please check it out, use this as a reference if you've noticed anything strange such as a slowdown in speed. Remember Apples Download section also contains many valuable gems such as Automator scripts that can actually do some of these things listed in OS X Maintenance guide for you!

For example, after doing an Software Update, you can find the tool from Apple called UpdateWasher, which will make sure everything is nice and smooth, after doing an update. UpdateWasher checks your Permissions and such to make sure its all correct.

This is merely intended to allow you more knowledge about your new Mac, and yes this is intended for new users who recently did the switch. So enjoy!
