We have an old ibook g4 at home used mainly for surfing, email, and chatting with friends. The machine only has a 1.2 ghz processor. Originally came with 512 ram but upgraded to 768mb a couple of years back. Still equipped with the Mac OS X (10.3.9 version).

Will the machine be able to handle an OS upgrade? If the OS is upgraded will it be supported by yahoo messenger with voice? This is the main "need" at this point in time.

I'm not really a tech savvy person so I'm looking forward to receiving some guidance from the gurus in the board. Thanks in advance.

It would easily run mac osx tiger, in fact I am willing to bet that'll run leopard too. You see macs make oss that don't need upgrades or stronger machines. It's part of their marketing campaign and I think it's great.

Thanks for the quick reply MYK. What Mac OS # would tiger be? The one on the machine right now is 10.3.9. And if I do upgrade to Tiger will it be able to run yahoo messenger with voice?

Tiger is the latest OSX, I think it's 10.4.something (been far from mac lately). I think it would be able to run yahoo messenger with voice.

I would think that Panther would be able to handle Yahoo fine. If you can't use voice, it's likely due to the fact that Yahoo for Mac doesn't support this feature. Have you tried using the new 3.0 beta or are you still using version 2.x? You may want to try the beta if you're not already.

If Tiger is 10.4.6 what would Panther be?

Yahoo messenger 3.0 beta is the one installed - webcam facility is there unfortunately voice is not supported.

Would anyone know if an upgrade to Panther or Tiger will get us voice on YM and video on Skype? Thanks.

Panther is 10.3. Mac OS 10.4 is Tiger. The current version of Tiger is 10.4.10. Leopard, which will be out in October, is 10.5.

Skype and Yahoo Messenger should support Panther anyways...if it doesn't upgrade to Tiger. Your iBook G4 will handle Tiger just fine.

Thanks for the info Sam. I guess our machine has Panther (Mac OS X version 10.3.9). I just looked at MacMall and they have the Tiger (10.4.6) going for around $119. I'll probably get this.

Well, I guess I want to give you a head's up, if you have more than one Mac and they're both an older OS, such as Panther, you might want to think about the Mac OS X Tiger Family Pack. Its just $199 but allows for you to install OS X Tiger onto five Macs.

Thanks for the info Sam. This is extremely helpful. Only have one Mac in my immediate family (married with kids) but my brother has 2 macs. I'll check with him what OS he's running.
