congrats! I've owned the 20" and 30" apple cinema displays but sold the 20" after a years use and took back the 30" (too big) and now have the 23" and love it!

Yes, gosh I've been through SO many displays. The latest one I received is the new Del 2408WFP which I got today. It's awful. I've never seen such a huge amount of latency. I move my mouse, and like 10 minutes later the cursor moves on the screen. Like....wuh? (Obviously the 10 minutes is an exaggeration. It's more like 6 minutes). So I called Dell 20 minutes after using/abusing the 2408WFP, and organised to send it back. Then I ran out to Best Buy, paid out astronomical amounts of money, held my ass on the way out, and hooked it up as soon as I got home. Anyway, so far I'm loving the 23". I love that I can control its brightness from my Apple BT keyboard, and that it wakes up INSTANTLY when I move my cursor/push a key. Truly designed to integrate well into the Apple computer crowd. :)

Gah. My only criticism of this display is a faint buzz that's audible at anything less than full brightness. I had this same issue with the Dell 2408WFP, and the LG 246WP in SRGB mode.

It's barely audible, and seems to be coming from the right side. I am planning to take it in for repair when I can. BTW nice screen. I use those on the Mac Pros at school and they really are great :) BTW what stand is that? I really want it :p

BTW I mean't no brightness, as in, it stops making the noise when I turn the backlight off. Edited my other post to reflect that.

Nice set up man...too bad there isnt any type of docking station for the apple like HP has where all you need is one connection to your pc for easy grab and go and not having almost every connection port to your mbp used...

Why did I have to see that on the way to the Apple store tomorrow??? HAHA could cost me 800 bucks!

Did you get a discount on it?

Also, what video card are you running it with? How is it connected? What did the keyboard cost? Is there any interference with your mouse and keyboard?

G ive me the details....Im heading there tomorrow!

commish, I also have that monitor. Just get it; you'll love it. Mine is hooked up (for the time being) with DVI to a cheap eMachines desktop with an nVidia 8400 GS . It works well, and so would be great with your own MBP.

No, a docking station. It will allow you to connect DVI, USB's, Firewire etc. all on one device so you are able to quickly grab and go.

Yeah, its a nice monitor, but I hate how the ACD doesn't have any other inputs besides DVI. I want to be able to plug in my game consoles.

Thanks, and not anymore. Sold the laptop, and the desktop (which used to occupy the space in the picture LOL) blew itself to hell about two months ago. The parts that were salvagable found their way into the eMachines - which was then brand new. So much for the warranty . . . :D

@OP: Forgot - congrats on a great choice from a completely unbiased forums member. LOL

You are, therefore, totally unqualified for Apple Fanboy status! [IMG]

There's a student discount of $100, making it $799 instead of $899. So expensive. Really, the only downside I can really see with the screen is that slight buzzing at less than full brightness, but this is GREATLY dependent on the ambient noise around you. If you have any ambient noise AT ALL (like a fan running or music on the lowest level etc...), you won't hear the screen making a sound. It really is a gorgeous display, and super sharp. This is with my 256MB Geforce 8600GT in my MBP.

The keyboard is the Apple BT keyboard. It's a great keyboard, but does experience the occasional dropout (the nature of 2.4Ghz BT technology, unfortunately). It only happens occasionally, and only for a second or two (a pop-up graphic appears telling you so). It's the

Exchange it, William. My own ACD's (a 30" and the 23" in the picture) make no such noises. I seriously doubt Apple will object to correcting this situation for you. Good luck.

My worry is that your display DOES buzz, but you're not as sensitive to it as I am (of course mean no offense...). Is that a possibility at all? Bear in mind pretty much every monitor I've tested recently has buzzed. I tried a Dell 2408WFP today, and THREE different LG 246WPs that buzzed. The only one that didn't buzz is my wife's Samsung 245BW (TN panel). Are you sure it's possible to get a non-buzzing 23" ACD? The lower I set the brightness, the louder the buzz, with the loudest being at the lowest volume, and the sound completely gone at the highest and one notch down. It's a pretty subtle noise, to be honest, but I REALLY hear it because of my sensitivity to such things... It's definitely not something I noticed till I was in an almost-silent room. Putting my ear to the back of the display really brought the sound to life.

Gr. Even if I wanted to exchange it, I can't right now since my Best Buy is out of stock and I don't live anywhere near an Apple Store. Gah.

Absolutely no offense taken, William. FWIW, just had my gf listen to the monitor to get a second opinion; she heard nothing. Of course, it is possible that your own hearing is better/more sensitive than ours, but I've never before heard (pardon the lame sentence structure here LOL) of this being an issue.

That's what I'm hoping for with new displays, is that Apple basically takes the iMac and removes the Mac from it. I will be so broke if they do that though.

WilliamG (oddly enough, my middle name is William, and my first name starts with G... But you can just call me George W. ), does it buzz at all at very dim brightness? On all of my Apple monitors, I've ran them at 10% or less brightness because I'm just so sensitive to light.

Modly, don't you lose crispness of text, color hues, and sharpness in general at so low a light level?

Wonder if such a level prolongs the life span of your screen to a meaningful or noticeable degree?

    Well hello there William. :)

Yes, it buzzes more and more as the brightness goes down. Zero buzzing at max brightness, and the buzz at one notch below max is so small I can't hear it unless I literally stick my head to the back of the screen. But this is very, very bright so it's a little frustrating not to be able to turn the screen down. ASIDE from this issue, the screen is amazing. I just don't know if I can keep it with the buzzing. GAH!!

I only lose the colour hue a little, but everything else is fine. However, aside from my brother, nobody else can stand to use my monitors.

I'm usually able to calibrate everything just right at a low level so almost everything looks normal (to me) though. But then again I'm very nocturnal and can see very well in the dark.

I'll have to check a monitor out in person and see how the brightness effects everything, but I think I'll still wait til new displays come out.

Well... I called Apple and they appear to think it's not normal for my screen to hum. I'm not sure whether I believe them or not based on my experience with external displays (not good experiences). So, I will return this display to Best Buy, and pick up a new one on Tuesday when they get more in. *sigh* I really love the display but the hum is too annoying to bear!

OK, I just exchanged my 23" display at Best Buy (my local got more in). Unfortunately, it has the SAME issue. Exactly the same. I hate to generalize products, but I seriously think it's a line issue, as in all of them have the problem. Whether every individual can hear it is another matter...

I'm really bummed right now.... :(

    That's no good.

I wish Best Buy had them out on display near me. I'm wondering if it's a batch issue (Where you likely had the same batch twice) because I'd assume by now that people would complain enough to fix that.

(Not trying to downplay the issue, but I'm curious because I want one... but not if it hums)

It wasn't the same batch (I prayed it was). One of the screens was shipped to the Best Buy in February 2008, and the other in October 2007. I'm really down about the whole thing, as my quest to get a screen that fits the bill is never-ending. I do love the S-IPS panel type, though, I found out. Just stunning at all angles. If the displays were out at your Best Buy, you'd definitely have to put your ear to the back of it, and even then you may not hear anything depending on how noisy it is there. It really is very subtle.

I'd probably need to bring some tools to hear it with. I work in a machine shop and listen to death metal, so my hearing isn't so great in loud environments, but I can hear high pitch noise hundreds of feet away.. So if it makes noise on my desk, I'd notice.

It's an absolutely stunning display. Gosh I can't say enough good things about it. It blows away everything else. At least I've found out I must have an S-IPS panel to be happy. PVA, MVA, TN etc have nothing on IPS.

William, I'm using the 23" Apple monitor as I type and don't hear a damn thing. Its too bad you're having this problem, because the screen is definitely nice.

FWIW, I also have a Dell 2405 which is about two years old. It isn't as nice a monitor overall, IMO, but the screen itself is excellent. Maybe another brand would work for you? The old Dell also is silent - to my ears.

I've tried quite a few brands, and because I'm used to all the different panels, I find myself confined to IPS panels, which, of course, are the most expensive panels out there (the Apple among them!).

Gah! Darn me and my expensive tastes. :)

Tell me about it. I can't help but buying Arrogant Bastard ale, and it costs $3.50 a bottle, or Guinness at $7.50 per 6-pack.

Oh, and hearses are not cheap to maintain either... I've had to make dozens of custom one off parts to replace damaged, worn out or broken pieces.

    I have expensive tastes.

Whoa buzzing noise?? I've owed the 20 ACD (sold last year) and my current 23" ACD and the 30" ACD (that I had but returned it because it was way too big for my needs), never had a buzz noise or any kind of noise coming from them. I would exchange it WilliamG.
