I've read on various forums that the nvidia 8800GS is based on the G92 and that its not affected by the G84 and G86 problems that's been going on recently.

But some other forums I've seen people mention that the 8800GS is a renamed version of the 8800M GTS card..

So with all these confusions is it safe to buy the imac with the nvidia 8800GS cards? Because otherwise I'm trying to go the ATI route no matter how great the nvidia's gpu might be in terms of power.

And since when is the 8800M GTS a G84?

man I hate the internet sometimes.

not only has Nvidia never announced which GPU's were specifically affected, they DID specifically say it was a previous generation of GPU, which could mean a number of different things.

There have definitely NOT been any major issues with Nvidia cards in Apple computers failing, or any other manufacturer for that matter, just Nvidia trying to cover themselves and overcompensating for a possible issue.

If you believe everything you read on the internet, be completely afraid and never even consider Nvidia for the rest of your life. If you believe in any form of logic, don't worry about it at all, you would be incredibly unlucky to have any issue with the GPU.

Wrong.. just have a look at the Apple discussions forum and you'll find plenty of them with various problems leading to the NVIDIA GPU.

    My own proof.. HERE

the only thing posted in Apple's discussion forums is people with a particular issue, just because it is posted there, does NOT mean it is a product wide or even a Known issue.

it is unfortunate that you have had bad luck with the machines you have owned, but millions of other people have not had any problems.

your post is exactly why the internet is often a terrible source for news or information.

The word from "reliable-enough" sources state that the effected chips are the 8400 and 8600 based off the G86 and G84 respectively.

Well, fair enough, but still.. it doesn't mean that there isn't any decent amount of people experiencing the similar problem with NVIDIA's crappy GPU/driver.

I frequently skim through these forums when I'm free and I did notice an upsurge of people with NVIDIA issues. Coincidence? I think not. :D

I guarantee you that what you're experiencing is the placebo effect. There's a rise in nVidia posts because people are retarded* (see Dell Grainy Screens). There's also a rise in your acknowledgment of them since you're paying more attention.

The defect is one that clearly affects long-term reliability. Given the 8000's have been on the market for less than a year, everything you see currently is within the norm.

*I would explain the placebo effect, and how people are more aware of a problem - even when it doesn't exist - when it's the first thing on their mind, but "retarded" is just easier to type.

I know what the placebo effect is. But the problem is, there is already a rise in NVIDIA-related issues on Apple systems with NVIDIA GPUs way before NVIDIA decide to go public with their news.
