Hmmm, the same countries listed in the article as most affected by the virus (Russia, China, Brazil and India) also are traditionally listed as places with high rates of windows piracy...

I think he's trying to get at once you got a legit version of windows and you are receiving windows updates, you should be fine and unaffected by the virus. The high levels of the virus in these areas can be considered individuals who use pirated and unprotected versions of windows.

I should know, as its common in my country for IT individuals to cut corners and sell pirate versions of windows with systems and then tell their customers 'just make sure not to put on auto update, your computer will not work'.

Same goes with the Macs here, people are told not to update OSX or Final Cut Studio etc., as its all pirated. Imagine if they were to receive such a virus.....same effect, no?

Wait, I read the article but it never said anything about pirating windows. Its an official update from microsoft that has this worm, which is even more messed up.

This is just totally, flat out, completely UNTRUE.

i read the article. it didn't mention anything even remotely similar to what you said.

just thought people should know that.

honestly, im not even sure where you went wrong. how did you get that out of the article? maybe you just read the title?

    ...

anyway, my mac still seems to work.

And like any other DEADLY WORM out there, it takes a complete tosser to allow it to effect your machine in the first place.

I have run my PC virus software free for atleast 4-5 years with no issues at all, constantly connected to the internet, doing many various tasks. And luckily because I am not a moron, nothing has happened.

Nothing has happened on my Mac for the same reason. Look, Macs are just as prone to "infection" as a PC, if the user base was just as foolish overall as the majority of computer users, and even the majority of computer users aren't that foolish. If someone would like, I would be happy to write a script that could "infect" your computer by you being foolish enough to download it from an email, through an obvious link, or whatever, that could really ruin your day online.

Biggest lesson here is, most of the news on the internet has very little credibility, make sure to actually do some fact checking of your own before posting a single article as factual at all.

    . . .moving on.

Oops my bad, I just skimmed through the article, but it does say that even windows machines with the with the patches released by microsoft still are not safe from the worm from downadup or the conficker.

    Which is really messed up.

Would you still be so glad to have a Mac, if Macs had a 90% market share and were also target for virus makers, piracy and hackers? Or would you switch to Windows with 10% market share and say it's so secure because no viruses exist?

Ah, these thought experiments and cliche' threads are eternal.

This is just a myth, I saw an article a year back or so proving that this was not true.
