Just as the title suggests, since the past couple of days there a noise coming from my Mac - something in the lines of mechanical HDD making noises or the sound made when a disc is not being properly read . I didn't drop it or anything. It is a high frequency noise that is really bothering me. I've checked the temps, they are cool, there is no load on the laptop and since the HDD is an SSD that is also out of the question.

Would really appreciate if someone had the same issue or if anyone can help me identity the issue.

Wonder if the CPU fan is making noise? Sounds like that being this is SSD equipped.

Nope, tested that as that was the second thing on the list. Sorry that I forgot to mention that before. I can hear the noise even when the fan is @1000 rpm or less; even when it is a 0 rpm.

Yes, wife's rMBP from late 2015 had a bad internal power unit and had to have the logic board replaced 5 times, none of the replacements lasted over 3 months. Her similar era MBP 15" has not had that issue even once. It's been reliable for her.

How do you get the fan to 0 or even 1000 RPM? The minimums in my 15" are 2000ish per side, slightly lower on the right.
I hear something like this sometimes with a USB peripheral attached, I guess it's just similar to coil whine. Or could be the fans, since they're always on unlike what you said, you can't force a Macbook fan to 0RPM with software. Open, canned air, close.
