    Notebook will not go any farther than to say it has no operating system.

    If it actually says "No operating system found", he is running PC hardware. Ever since I can remember, if my OS or drive was borked on my Mac, it would give me a flashing question mark over a system folder.

    sounds like his HD has crashed unless he manually deleted the OS
