I created a second account called "admin" which I'm going to use if my computer stuffs up but I can't see it in the user accounts page. (The one where you see who to log in as) I can log in if I type in the username and password but it doesn't actually appear there. Why is that?

I am not sure why it would not show up. Delete the account and create a new one, see if that does it. Also, try naming it something besides Admin.

I tried renaming it and it didn't work. I can create new accounts and they appear, but this one doesn't.

Cashmonee may have a point; in a Linux system once I tried to create an account named "Shelle", after my sister's, and it wouldn't let me. Perhaps the name "admin" is similarly protected under OS X.
