Are there any resources or does anyone have any advice for software for the Macbook that is handy? I am looking for any cheap/free tools for quick photo edits, movie edits...and random things...I am really lost in this thing when it comes to software and what is out there.

    Currently:
    Open Office 3.0
    Microsoft RDP
    Firefox
    File Synchronization

    codec's
    browser plugins
    finder ad'ons
    etc

Perian - codecs for many video files for QT
Flip4Mac - WMV codecs for QT
VLC Player - any other files that your QT can't play with the first two plugins
AppCleaner - to cleanly uninstall your files (works well most of the time, other times you have to find the extra files that programs leave behind yourself using spotlight)
Quicksilver - an awesome tool for launching and performing tasks
iTaf - alarm clock using iTunes (if you need it)
iStat Pro - widget that shows lots of useful and important system information
    Adium - for messaging purposes
Growl - awesome notification tool for most programs
GimmeSomeTune - best iTunes plugin ever (album art download, last.fm scrobbling and much more)
MacFuse and NTFS-3G - so you can read NTFS external hard drives
OnyX - great system cleaning tool
    ClamXAV - Antivirus tool
uTorrent - bittorrent (much better than transmission IMO)
The Unarchiver - better unarchiving tool than Stuffit

Take a look at the top programs being used on osx.iusethis.com for more programs if you need it!

perhaps create a sticky and we should move it there?

Anyone have more spare time than me, I would not be able to follow-up all the time, great list- getting my macbook pro tomorrow, 2.4 as I got it a "bit" under stock price.. and will add either the new 256 g Samsung ssd or Itel's ssd to it, so the cost will probably be high enough...

Yea, we have a ton of threads when people first get their mac asking what software to use. Also I know its probably been covered in a couple of the stickies already, but its usually many pages deep.

Just make a sticky, people can see it right away, check the programs, and we wont have new threads everytime someone gets a new mac (Dont wanna come across as being annoyed or anything, but there are a LOT of these threads)

No need for a new sticky. There is already a link to recommended software under the switchers guide.

careful there is a guy and his buddies going around trying to ban people for talking about software. I got a few threats already from this guy for asking about legitimate software.

He is promoting google and wants us to use it for some reason must be pay per click thing. I thought promoting websites was against the rules according to his private mesasge.
