At first when I saw it on another site I didn't believe it. Then I check Apple.

This means they are just throwing out updates when ever now.

I think this one looks awesome.

Yea, saw this on macrumors this morning, another way for Apple to suck out your money. What if you break your headphones or want to use your own? I mean I didn't spend $100 on Bose ear buds for them to sit around.

Most people stick with those crappy earphone anyways, I don't how, you could always buy the better Apple ones.

    You don't have to.

99% of the people I see at my school with a ipod still use the crappy headphones that come with them. If you are a serious music listener you won't get a shuffle.

You're right, I wasn't complaining because I wanted one (I have a touch), it was more of a general statement. What if you end up breaking your headphones though? You can't use an old pair, or borrow someone elses, your going to be forced to spend $30+ on special shuffle ones.

Any head phones will still work, you just won't be able to control the shuffle.

*Edit* LOL I just realized you need the controls to play it.

Cool feature. Too bad they aren't offering an 8GB version you can't tell me it won't fit in there. 8GB is small now.

This talking feature going to be going to any other devices.

Yeah I thought you just wouldn't be able to skip track and volume. Then I realized you need it to play it. It will still probably sell well.

8gb would bring the price up to much. They probably want to keep it at $99.

The old shuffle looked nicer, was less expensive, and could use standard earphones. And the controls were simpler too: http://www.macworld.com/article/139333/2009/03/ipod_shuffle_design.html . Oh yeah and it had the color options.

Who needs 4 gb on a screenless where you can't really navigate much?

I tend to agree with Seshan that most Shuffle buyers probably aren't audiophiles who need to use their own earphones... but still, if the earphones break or get lost, it'll cost more to replace them.

Engadget suggests there'll probably be an adapter to let you use regular earphones... but that's still another thing to buy.

Oh yeah, that "VoiceOver" thingy is potentially kind of neat... but that's about it.

All my new earphones were pretty much killed in half year, either by me or by some animals.... so I need to think about it before buying it.

Meh. I don't like the idea that all the controls are on the headphones.
I have the 1st generation shuffle and I've messed up my headphones numerous times (I don't buy Apple's), so I can't imagine messing up headphones where my way to control it is on it. =\

Apple's getting a little crazy with this version of the shuffle I think. But people will still buy this I'm sure.

I'm waiting for the new Jaybirds bluetooth earphones coming out that are supposed to be as good in sound quality as wired headphones. But yeah, getting this would rule out any possibilities of having a bluetooth headset. I'm an iPod classic-man myself.

hahaha, i'm the only one that voted awesome.

besides the controls/headphones, i like its simplicity. thats what shuffles are for. IMHO. I still have my 1G shuffle but dont use it anymore due to having a 3G iPhone.

LOL, It's just another proprietary device (In a away) Can't get sued for only allowing your products to be used with your own products. It happens all the time.

I wounder if Apple care would cover them. Since they are needed to use the iPod.

I don't think they're disallowing anything in this case... I don't think they're stopping anyone from making their own iPod Shuffle earphones... they'll probably even help other companies do that... they've encouraged helped support plenty of 3rd party iPod accessories in the past... it's just that it's so new there isn't anything that uses it yet... but anyways it's still a potential annoyance IMO that you need some kind of specially-designed earphones.

For heaven's sake dude, you have absolutely nothing positive to say ever about Apple or it's products, what's your beef? :p Many companies do this and they are perfectly in their right. Bose creates it's Lifestyle base unit to be used with only Bose designed speakers. Nobody can successfully sue a company for designing their products to work with only their peripherals or accessories.

Yeah being locked into the Apple headphones is a bit .
However... they will no doubt seel after market extensions that allow you to plug an adapter with controls into the ipod, then plug your headphones into that.
Here's a question though, how do you go back a song?

i thought it was cool at first until i saw ALL the controls except power is on the earphones. thats a total deal breaker for me. apple headphones suck and dont even stay in your ear. great listen to mustic for 30 minutes while trying to get the earphones to stay in for 25 of it. um no.

I will just get an older shuffle.

I can actually see the use in this. Looks like it's aimed towards the ultraportable segment: joggers, runners, etc. Having the controls on the earbud cord can make listening to music while running a bit easier.

For those whom are even contemplating connecting a pair of high-end headphones to a device of this size should be ashamed! This Shuffle is obviously not built to power something so large. Plus, with a device you can't change the equalizer on (let alone, view your current track details) what's the point in superior sound quality anyways?

Good point. I suppose the only equalizer is the type of earbud/phone you get. Vmodas are more bass heavy while I'm sure other brands may be more treble heavy. BASS FTW!

    epic phail for sure.

i like the integrated usb connector in the 1st gen, even though it was bulky.
the size of the second gen was the best.
this one....you must use the earphones to control. thats just locking you into their headphones, and unless those sound magical, no way. once they break, you keep shelling out money. Apple makes moar monies like that.

Although interesting, I really do not like this design decision. Not everyone likes headphone controls. Many people like having their headphones under their shirt so there's no wire dangling about - the standard set headphones don't seem to want to play nice with that.

    This is an epic fail.
It wouldn't be as much of a fail if it came standard with an "extension cord" that had the controls on it. So that you could plug in your own headphones (instead of using the terrible standard Apple headphones). The fact that you're either forced to use the standard headphones or to buy a cord (which should already be included) makes this an epic fail.

I always find it funny when people say "epic fail."
