Ugly. My biggest turn-off is that huge band along the bottom.

The black border doesn't bother me so much, but if they were going to go black, they should have gone with black for the keyboard keys as well. The black iMac and aluminum iMac with the white and aluminum keyboard just doesn't look right.

Same with the mouse. They should have gone black.

Apple is usually more aesthetically uniform. All these different colors just don't look right.

having a black border is better for viewing things in an accurate way. it will make movies look better, photos, etc.

I don't like the black Apple. I think they should've left the Apple logo white, but that's just my opinion. It would've been cool if the Apple lit up like the laptops.

I think the black border is to give movies more of a "cinema" look. I know because of the black iPod, the white ones don't do movies justice but the black one makes the movie look more theatrical.

Actually no they are not, Tiger is so not unified. One app is brushed metal, one app is smooth grey, one app is white, one app has grey scroll bars while others have blue gel. Apple is not known for uniformity, they are just getting it right in Leopard. However I love the new iMac look.
I think if they dedicated the mouse, cables and power bricks to the color of the computer it would cost "us" the consumer more which is most likely why Apple keeps those white even for the black Macbook.

LOL, you're not going to see it, nobody will. It's sorta useless on your desk at home for the Apple to light up from the back.

You know, that bugs the crap out of me. I've found myself walking around to the other side of my desk more than once just to see the glowing Apple logo on the back of my MBP lid because i can't see it otherwise....

BTW, mick...trying out Shiira...it seems nice (actually like a blend of omniweb and camino). 3 probably painfully obvious questions that i didn't feel like making a whole new thread about:

how do i open an address i type in the location bar as a new tab (i.e. it's command-enter or alt-enter in camino and firefox respectively).

how do I get bookmark keywords to work?

how do I get it to stop making a tab when i only have 1 tab open (if i'm not using the page dock)...better yet, how do I customize the page dock? (i like the transparent windows and the expose-style tabs though!)

Sorry, I really couldn't tell you. These days, since my Macbook blowup, I'm not using a Mac as my primary machine. As such, I no longer get to use Shiira.

As I remember though, it's probably the quickest browser available for OSX, and it's really slick looking. I really enjoyed it, in the short time I was able to use it.

I don't usually recommend things like this, but you seemed particularly interested in finding a good OSX web browser. Immediately, Shiira popped into my head.

Ah, thanks. Shiira certainly has several extremely nice features (that expose thing!).

I might switch to it for normal browsing :D

I'm glad you like it. I think it deserves a bigger user base than it has. I hope it holds up for you.

It sure is slick, isn't it? Very nice interface. It's one of those apps that makes you happy to use a Mac. It just feels so quick and smooth. It almost feels like it's built into OSX. I always thought it felt like a smoother version of Safari.

I must have been sleeping at the switch... the aluminum is nice.. but I don't know how I feel about the black border and back..I think the white Imac was better looking overall by a nose.

Y'know, I don't think the new iMac is ugly anymore. I like how the new iMac looks thinner and sleeker now, compared to what now looks to be a "bulky" and "toyish" old iMac. The aluminum is really nice.

It's strange - a lot of people reacting so strongly about this new iMac, who probably haven’t spent even 5 minutes in front of them in person. I bought a 20" model last Wednesday and its been 7 days since i owned it – black border bothered me at first but after using it – its just a non issue. A lot of people also mentioned that mighty mouse looks out of place and it’s a worst mouse – again – a non issue, I have been using it and it does it job fine – may be not the best mouse ever designed but sure not the worst one.

I was just a bit shocked when I saw it. I understand the Aluminum, but the border seems odd is all. Like you said dihsharp, it probably is something people will get used to, but I'm also rather fond of my 20" imac in white. I personally would have designed it with a minimal black border, if not just completely covering the border with aluminuM. It's still very nice though anyways IMO

The main thing that shocked me the most was that it wasn't a radical design change. I expected a major redesign in the iMac more than two years since the G5 design. The new iMac just looks like the old iMac G5, with different casing materials and a thinner look.

Yes new iMac looks a lot like old one - I was hoping for a bit radical design from Ive studio too - but probably they were so busy with iphone that iMac got little bit of beating :) I guess they played is safe.
