A video of today's Special Event has been posted on apple.com: http://events.apple.com.edgesuite.net/r27842e/event/index.html?test=q1wa2sz3x

Live from Apple Special Event, this is what we've seen so far. These are Engadget photos.

I had a o_O look at first. It wasn't that different and I didn't like how the edges of the screen was so thin.

    Specs:
    • Up to 2.4 GHz Core 2 Extreme
    • Up to 4 GB of RAM
    • ATI Radeon HD graphics (can't confirm, but top model looks to be Radeon 2600)
    • Up to 1 TB HDD
    • 802.11n
    • Bluetooth 2.0
    • iSight camera (I can't see it on the iMac though o_O)

    No 17-inch version.
So far I'm not liking the design.

Finally! The iMac can be opened! :p

    iLife '08!!!!

New iPhoto. Nothing too significant, in my opinion.

.Mac upgrades. More .Mac features related to iPhoto.

    iPhone can "talk to" .Mac.

All new iMovie. Better (still not good enough) iWeb. Better iDVD. New GarageBand.

.Mac now offers 10 GB of storage. Still not enough for me to pay $100/year.

If you look closely on the right section of the Dock there's a charts icon, looks like iWork's being updated.

New iWork. Improved Keynote and now a better word processor feature in Pages for those that just want a word processor.

Spreadsheet added. Called "Numbers". Export and import files "flawlessly" with Excel.

Quote from Tim Cook of Apple: "We're refreshing the Mac mini today.", but no other mention of it.

Introduction of new products are over, its Q&A time now. Unless there's one more thing later.

Yeah, those screens were leaked a few days ago. Looks like they went with the iPhone theme. Nice of them to finally upgrade them. The apple store website is down. I'm waiting to find out about the mac mini!

"The new look features a glossy display to match the majority of Apple's consumer lineup"

I guess? what's wrong with just "arrange by date"? :p

I don't have many pictures though, so maybe I'm just not seeing the advantages of this. I still organize my image files manually - but that's because they're all arranged by chapters and volumes.

    Ah well

I was skimming over the notes that Engadget took about the Apple press conference today and noticed that the new iLife '08 ships out with all new Macs... starting today. The problem is that mine supposedly shipped out... today, and now I'm wondering on if my MBP will have it or the previous version installed. Bummer.

Well, the apple store was back up for a minute or two. There was a picture of the new iMac with a starting price of $1199. and a green "new!" tag on the mac mini, with a starting price of $599.
Unfortunately the site is back down.

Apple.com is updated. Man, the power of Apple's marketing. I thought the new iMac looked disgusting when I first saw it on Engadget, but it looks gorgeous on Apple.com.

I'm seriously beginning to think I won't get Microsoft Office 2008, and iWork '08 will be enough for me. I always loved Keynote, its beautiful, but I always didn't like how Pages was too design oriented. Now that Keynote does word processing better I'm very tempted to get it. Its much cheaper than Office anyways.

I think I do like the new iMacs after seeing them on Apple.com. They really do look different from the ones on Engadget. I think I might order one when I get back from France. I miss a GPU haha.

I haven't done much research on iWork and what it really is. On Apple's site it gives me the feeling that its a Microsoft Office clone... thats spiffier.

Hmm, I must say that the new keyboard is beautiful. The new iMac...Meh. It looks kinda weird, I think. Probably would have been better if they had kept it completely aluminum instead of putting the black border around the screen. Actually, if they had used white instead of black, it wouldn't have been bad either. imo, it looks too complicated. The thing is, the "Jay Leno" chin of the 3rd gen iMacs (G5 and CD) is still there, though less prominent due to the black border around the screen.

Santa Rosa CPUs and the new HD2600 GPU though, so its not all bad.

I agree with the Jay Leno chin. I'd rather have it a little thicker and get rid of that huge bottom section. I feel it's even more prominent now that the borders on the side and top are so thin, the bottom just juts out like crazy.

I find it a pity that the back is still curved, and not completely flat. That would have been cool.

Oh yea, and the 3rd gen iMac is not hard to get to the memory as well, its two screws instead of the one screw that is needed on the 4th gen.

And is it just me, or does the new iMac have a desktop graphics card?

Oh and what's with ATi instead of nVIDIA?

So if the Apple store is down at the moment, when it eventually comes back up, will we be able to order a new Imac? If so, I might jump on this deal, especially the 1499.99 setup with upgraded processor and graphics card. Also, does Apple still have their student discount running, where we can get a certain percentage off the price and get an Ipod?

The iMac has always had ATI, the only one with nvidia in the last 3 years is the latest C2D 24" iMac, with its 7300GT/7600GT. Everything else has been a Radeon (9600, X600, X1600, and now HD2600).

Depends on what your desktop specs are. I'd give it a few days and make sure that apple has written all the proper bootcamp drivers for this machine before switching if you're gonna be running XP much.

Hooray for the new mac mini! Finally went to C2D, and 1GB ram. The extra HD space is nice too. Ordering one for work right now.

I will also say i really like the design much better than the older one.... slimmer profile and the black glass is much more appealing than a white or silver surround!

    You're both right :p.

There's two versions of the new keyboard. The wired one is a full keyboard with number pad. There's also a wireless one, and that one lacks a number pad.

    Ugly.

I agree, they should've gone with full aluminum... and get rid of that glossy crap. It would be a nightmare to work with in bright-daylight office setting.

The keyboard, even though it looks sleek, seems to be an ergonomic nightmare. It's pretty much a modularized notebook keyboard.

    Not impressed!

p.s. I don't see the connection between the iMac and the cheesy porno music in the ad?

I don't really fancy the new look much... come to think of it, the black surround around the LCD resembles the Zune a bit (*runs from impeding angry mob*).

Perhaps the computer on its own will look much better in person (the silver would help it for sure) but combined with the white accessories, it just doesn't jive as well as the last generation.

How true :p. It really is amazing, no one really cares how the desktop of the Dell or HP looks, they just use the computer and maybe worry about the monitor size :D. But with an iMac people will decide not to buy it because of its colour :p.

Well, it depends on the market. Anything for the gaming sector will try to emphasize aesthetics a lot - the Alienwares, the XPS lines, etc...with the exception of the VoodooPCs (ugh?) :p

It's not that.... at least Dell and HP thought out of the materials they use.

It seems that the black border on the screen is just something the developer team thought of in the last minute. Too tacky in my opinion. If the iMac look ugly in the pics on the Apple website, I wouldn't expect more in real life.

    Ditch the black glossy border.

Well, Apple is about the aesthetics, hence its important. Not that its a bad computer otherwise, but it is known for the aesthetics. Its like Dell and coupons, or Sony and being overpriced (ok, not really :p).

And the glossy screen is horrible, it would be a nightmare to use in a workplace. Its not so bad for notebooks, but desktop screens should never be glossy.
