I was told that MSN messenger was coming out new with the release of word or works whatever they call it 2008. Is that true?

No. The mac bu started working on a new version of messenger after they finished working on office 2008. I wouldn't even expect a beta until mid-2008.

Well Office 2004 including MSN Messenger for Mac...

Wouldn't it make more sense if "MSN Messenger for Mac, 2008" be released with Office 2008...?

I had a chance to play around with a beta of the new 2008 release, and the only thing i was interested in was msn.

To me it looked exactly the same, and i think the version number/copyright was exactly the same (or very close). So id have thought theyd include the new msn in the beta, but they didnt on the version i tried.

So i dunno. but id really like a new version too.

Microsoft already announced publicly somewhere (the Mac BU Blog?) that Office 2008 will include Messenger for Mac 6.0.3, that is currently available separately.

They are developing Messenger for Mac 7, which will finally bring A/V features, but they can't release it until Windows Live Messenger 9 is released. The Office Communicator (corporate Messenger in Windows) uses a new A/V stack, and that is what Messenger for Mac 7 is using (since the Mac version combines corporate and consumer Messenger services), but we are waiting for Windows Live Messenger 9 to transition Windows consumers to the new A/V stack. There is a beta of Messenger for Mac 7 available to corporations so they can communicate with Office Communicator, but it isn't available to the public. So ironically, Mac Messenger may be leading the pack on this, but Mac BU can't release it until the Windows version is finished to ensure there aren't any compatibility issues with the Windows implementation. I guess it's too much to ask for the Windows version to conform to the Mac version rather than the other way around.

That is pretty cool. Windows Live Messenger 9 has been beta testing for a while now. I only saw it run once shortly (I think only true beta testers can sign in for now) but I liked it a lot. Animated display pictures, custom sounds for each contact, multipoint log in sounds cool too but I dont have any use for it :p

Hopefully the new mac version will have some of these features too. One thing I am worried about is that WLM 8 is useless unless you patch it to get rid of advertisement and all the other useless junk and limitations. I hope there will be a patch for the mac version too some day.
