Would you consider the new Unibody the new Powerbook 12"!
    - The white macbooks were never in the 12" Powerbook league because:

    a) Intel graphics
    b) Made from lower quality plastic

The new unibody macbook shares with the Macbook Pro:

    a) Same build material, also same build quality
    b) Way better graphics then the old white macbook
    c) 2.4ghz model has backlight keyboard
    d) Similar keyboard

Now I know the Unibody Macbook is missing pro features:

    a) Firewire
    b) express card slot
    c) decent display

But for the price I would consider the new Macbook to be a good 12" powerbook replacement!

Power books haven't been made since 2006... The Macbooks are Macbooks... I'm really confused to what the point of this thread is.

An unsolicited effort to shut up the people who miss the small-footprint Powerbook? :p

Well there isn't really a question being asked here... so I would have to kinda agree about the point/lessness of this thread.

That said, to me the new macbook does fill the gap that the 12" left behind... and I really like my new mb alu. Its a really really great little laptop.

    As for the listed -ve's
    a) I can't remember the last time I used firewire even though it was there on my old mb

    b) this would be nice but again its not a deal breaker for me

    c) The display is actually not that bad, maybe I have low standards but I find it more than ok for all day use @ both the office and home watching movies.

    a
    :)

Even though you don't, some people use FW several times a day, though, and depend on it for a living, UnderPM :p

All three lacks are dealbreakers to me:
    No firewire=unuseable,
    No firewire AND no Expresscard=Unuseable,
Poor, glossy screen=too annoying to use in all but the optimal lighting settings(=unuseable).

it is difficult to apprehend how people can accept the display from macbook personally... one small tilt in the wrong direction i already see issue with colors and contrasts; in a sense i see this problem even with the perceivably* better screen on mbp which annoy me quite a bit :(

I can see that form factor, like the shell, screen size, etc, being like the Powerbook. As far as internals go, the Macbook has a better processor, better graphics, and all around newer technology that makes for a better built computer compared to the PB. ;)

The new macbooks resemble the old powerbooks in terms of design in the designer's mind.(i.e a metal portable that will last through time and which is affordable by the customer), but it is NO way llike the old powerbooks which have proved their reliability.

IMO if they made it so that the MBA had

    1) An expresscard 34 slot, that would solve heaps of connectivity problems.
    2) An optical audio out

I would consider it a successor to the powerbook 12"

R U kidding? Think back what the 12" Powerbook lacked that the 15" and 17" had, a PCMCIA card slot nor did it have an optical audio out. Nor did it have the same high contrast screen as the 15" and 17". In fact the 12" Powerbook screen was horrible. The whole thing was a glorified 12" iBook. The MBA far exceeds the 12" Powerbook.
