    Hello everybody,
a am considering to buy a new Macbook Pro and I would like to know are they any better conisidering heat and noise. I saw previous version of MBP in the store (with Merom) and the first thing I have noticed how hot machine gets. The bottom really gets hot and the top middle of keyboard on top also. In my opinion you definetly cant use MBP in your lap.
Are new MBP any better regarding heat. I am not looking for answers when you point me to some reviews but rather real life experience. For me the noise is also an issue. I dont want my fans in laptop to work constantly on 6000 rpm just to correct Steve Jobs ultra modern design that doesnt work well and has serious flaws-

the new MBP use the newest Intel Penryn processors (45nm) so in theory should be cooler. How this translates into actual perceived heat is another question which i cannot answer. I was in an apple store the other day and though the 15" MBP was quite hot and it was the recent refreshed version.

The floor machines aren't really a good gauge of the heat generated by the MBP. I thought that MBPs were excessively hot until my uncle let me use his for a couple hours. I use mine on my lap all the time (previous version) so the 45nm ones should be the same if not better.

Yes, under load they do tend to get fairly hot but most things that you would be doing that would put that much pressure on the processor would most likely be done on a desk and not in your lap.

On my new MBP (refresh 15" model) I would not use it on my lap during games. After a couple hours of COD 4 it does get hot and the fans are spinning. However the heat and noise during games is not unlike any other laptop you could get that plays games at a high level and I am not unhappy with it.

When Doing work in windows or OS X my MBP is completely quiet and i could easily use it on my lap since it barely gets warm.

    Hope that helps.

My Merom-based MBP rarely ever gets hot. It does get a little warm on the bottom but not hot. The keyboard area and palm rest also remain cool to the touch. I use it on my lap most times except when doing video editing as that makes it a little too warm to keep on the lap.

With Penryn, it should be even better.

As far as noise; again, mine is nearly silent. I actually have to put my ear right up to the keyboard area to know it's on. I heard the fans come on maybe once in about a month of use and that was due to me inadvertently placing the MBP on a pillow blocking all the air from the rear-bottom area beneath the screen. So the noise should be even better, if it's possible, on the Penryns.

I have yonah, the hottest running MBP CD version (except for the first few montsh the MBP were released). I game with it on my lap. It's not bad at all. Of course, I have jeans on.

Only part that gets REALLY hot (and this improved a lot on future MBP) is the little part above the keyboard.

FIY, the old CD MBP kept the fans at 1k rpm, which was pushed up to 2k on later versions. I run mine at 3k generally, sometimes it goes to 4k, but you still cannot hear it unless you really try.

I agree, it seems the place that gets warm is above the F keys, but really not that bad..personally I dont think it gets that hot compared to some other notebooks ive used.. I use a zalman nc1000 cooler and at idle everest shows temps are around 45-50c, in games I overclock to 525 core /725 memory and the gpu temp stays around 80c, highest ive seen it go is 84 then drop back.

Problem is you can't base the MBPs outside heat on the temps of its components. The components don't get much hotter than the average laptop. The reason everything feels so hot is because the case is metal, which heats up more, and faster than the average plastic case, and also acts as a heatsink. I use mine on my lap all the time while gaming though. It does get real hot, but not enough to physically hurt you. I'm talking Morem though. Penryn should be a little cooler, but probably won't be physically noticable.

Hello, I have the just released MBP. It runs quietly and is cool to the touch most of the time. Not as cool as the Sony's I've had but remember the MBP has powerful graphics chip in it and has a metal case while I ran the Sony's on the Intel X3100 graphics chip and Sony's are encased in a plastic/magnesium case which does not conduct heat like metal does. The only time the unit gets warm is if I use it with the lid closed (use of external monitor and KB/MS).

the keys on my 2.16 MBP used to pop when the computer heated up, and then pop again when it cooled.

    is this still the case?

I just received a new MBP yesterday and I'm using it on my lap without any problems at all. I don't think you will find it uncomfortable at all.

My old one, just purchased last December, was the 65 mm processor and I didn't have any issues using it on my lap. I think the new one with the 45 mm processor should be even cooler... but it's a little too early to judge that.

That'd be very annoying. My MBP does not do this.

Uh... the keys should NEVER do that on a MBP. That would probably be a bad keyboard.... or a keyboard without a heat shield.

    I don't think it was a 2.16 GHz Core 2 Duo MBP issue...probably just a defect.
