My current company is getting ready to be sold (will have a job with new one) and the current owners are buying me a laptop of my choice before they go. I currently have a 2008 Aluminum 13" MacBook. I really like the size, but the insides have not changed much in 2 years and the current 13" Macbook Pro is very similar to what I already have.

I have looked at the 15" but I have never owned a notebook that size, I prefer the smaller form factor. Now I believe there will be new Macbook Pros next year (possibly even minor updates, but new proc in the 13"). Which will give me the best resale in about 6-7mos from now, a 13" Macbook Pro or a 15" Macbook Pro. By resale I know the 15" is more $$ but it also seems like eBay is always flooded with them and they depreciate more rapidly than other sizes.

    Thoughts?

Macbook Air. Another revision won't come for over a year if the trend continues.

Man if I was in your position, I don't know ... I'll probably just request the Air because it's newer.

The 13" MBP's will eventually get i3 chips, it's just a matter of time, the MBA's are pretty similar to the 13" MBP (with the exception of processing power).

Apple products rapidly depreciate when a new body style comes out. The MBP and MB are practically the same, just minor CPU speeds and the title on the screen bezel :p.

If you can select any, just go for either the MBP13 2.66GHz, or the MBP i5 2.53, they are mid to high models, so chances are they will either be on the low end or mid end still when the next revision comes out. In terms of resale value the non-basic configured models will reward you more when it is time to sell.

If you go with the 15" make sure you get it online and get the Hi-RES display in either Glossy or AntiGlare. In my market, these are HOT beauties. Soon the MBP15 will ditch the 1440x900 display and they will all be 1680x1050, so a difference like this will get you probably 60-80 more dollars when its time to sell.

The MBP13 has a 1280x800 and because the new MBA has a 1440x900 it signify the next MBP13 will most likely have a i3 and a Hi-Res 1440x900. A change like this will make older models decrease in price.

Good luck on your decision. Keep us informed!

I'm leaning on the 13" MacBook Pro, I need an optical drive where I work as I get a lot of aerial photography and other documents mailed to me on DVD's.

I like the idea of the 15", i've just never been a fan of big notebooks. Whatever I get I plan to replace it ins 6-7 mos with new one anyways (probably 13" esp if it has 1440x900 display), I just have to jump on this opportunity now as the company is buying it FOR me, so it will be MINE.

I had thought about that, but I really have no desire for a 15" and I dont think Im going to get huge resale from a 512gig ssd

I really think you should get the 15"er, or a 256GB Air. The Air only because it's different from what you have; performance should be similar. The 15 will get you a pretty good performance bump.
