    Hello all,

I am a longtime pc user and was in the market for a laptop and decided to check out some Macbooks at my local apple store. I am replacing a 15.4 inch 2 year old VooDoo envy that I was never completely satisfied with. It didn't perform as expected and the battery life was horrible. What I am looking for in a laptop is a balance between portability, battery life, power, and gaming performance. Most of my general computer use is done while the laptop on battery power but I do plug it in to play pc games. Anyway, long story short, after much research I felt like that one of the new Macbook Pros was perfect for what I needed. Plus I was excited about the idea of something new.

The battery life is excellent. I used it for well over 3 hours on battery power during my calibration before I plugged it back into the power. An install of WoW was also done during that time as well as general use (internet, mail, photos, transferring some files, etc..)

I am new to Mac and have really enjoyed my journey into the Leopard OS. I am not a pc or mac fan either way and will use both my mac and pc.

So far I have been very pleased except for installing Vista 64 bit home premium using bootcamp. (see my other thread for details)

Enjoy the pics. I am not really one to write a review but I can at least communicate my reasons for buying and my experience up until now. If anyone has any questions or wants different pics, please ask away or let me know. I hope to have my bootcamp issue resolved and update the post with some thoughts after my first week of use. Here are specs:

    MacBook Pro
    15.4 inch display
2.53 Ghz intel core 2 duo
    4 gig ram
    320 gig 7200 rpm HD
    nvidia geforce 9400m
    nvidia geforce 9600m gt

    Thanks,
    William

    Nice pics!but I have 2 questions for you?\!

    1)are you satisfied with it?
2)What do you think-is it overpriced for what you got?or it is worth the money you have paid for it?

So far I am loving it. I am a completely new mac user and I really dig the OS. For my needs, I don't think it is overpriced. I had a hard time finding a lap top that fit the needs I wanted of power, portability, and battery life. Budget wasn't a huge concern of mine but it was component of the whole buying process.

Now, having said that, I still haven't been able to get vista 64 bit home premium to install via boot camp (see my other thread). i know it can be done and plenty of people don't have issues so I am going to hold my final judgement on the gaming side of things until I can get windows up and running and install some games.

So, the jury is still out on the gaming side of it for me but my expectations are high. Hopefully someone can help me with my vista issue.

That is one nice laptop. Did you configure it online or did you install the hard drives and aftermarket?

I configured it at apple.com. I really am loving the OS.

BUT, I still cannot get xp or vista to install via bootcamp. See my other thread for details. I have contacted apple support and they are trying to help but no luck as of yet. They are kind of stumped.

If I cannot get it to work, I think I am going to return it and order one already configured with Vista from Macmall.com. Has anyone dealt with them before? Good place to order?

I really want to be able to use the bootcamp feature so I can install my games.

    thanks
    william

Thank you. The desktop is from a boutique builder called overdrivepc. I highly recommend them, the performance they obtain with their systems is unbelievable. They were actually bought by Velocity Micro in early 2008 I believe. Those headphones in the pic are beyerdynamic DT770s. Yes, they are good for music. They are also great for gaming, the sound is excellent. You can hear everything! I also have some Grado SR60s that I prefer more for music though.

To update on my Boot Camp issue. I exchanged my retail copy of xp and was able to successfully install XP Home 32 bit on my MacBook Pro without issue. I guess it was a faulty disc. I still don't understand why Vista 64 bit didn't work but oh well. XP so far is running fine. I had zero problems this go round.

I am in process of getting my games and peripherials installed into xp and I wil update with some thoughts on the gaming performance and new pics and screenshots.

So far so good. I am really pleased with my new Mac. I am digging the OS. So much to learn.

    Williamsw2,

I'm curious how you're finding the transition to the Leopard from Vista/Win7.

    * Are the searches for files/folders more accurate and faster?
    * Do you hear the HDD wurring away as you use it for intensive tasks (Photoshop)?
    * Finder - although similar to Windows Explorer its principle is significantly different in my mind. How are programs & files allocated from user to user? (is it now similar to Win7: C:\Users\Prom1(me)\Library?
    * How are you able to determine between an Alias & the actual program - my understanding is that the icons are exact. ??

    Thanks for your inputs.

    Hey,
I, too, just purchased a Macbook Pro and may be able to answer some of the questions that people have - I'll be posting a review later on.

    1. Searching for files is maybe not more accurate per-se, but definitely faster with the Spotlight feature.
    2. I have yet to hear my 320GB 7200RPM hard drive.
    3. No idea. I only use one account, so :\ Sorry.
    4. The actual program should generally be located in the Applications folder, and the Alias hopefully elsewhere. If nothing else, you could just Quick Look it to see what kind of file it is.

    Prom1,

1.) I am finding spotlight very useful as of now. I have been able to go direclty to an application that I wasn't sure of the location. I have not done much searching for files, only apps.

2.) The MacBook Pro seems to be fairly silent in OS X. I haven't noticed really noticed the noise.
    3.) Only use one account
4.) I haven't not used the alias feature yet. Not sure what it does!

All in all, my transition has been to OS X has been great. It really is a slick OS.

I am very impressed with the battery life. This is exactly what I needed. Excellent battery life with the option of good gaming performance with 9600m gt. I am chasing a 1 year old around the house so being able to take my laptop from room to room for general use is a necessity.
