I am considering purchase of 15 inch MBP. I am however concerned about some of the wi-fi network issues some have complained about in the Apple Support Discussion group.

Apple - Support - Discussions - new macbook pro 2011 weak and dropping ...

It seems that for some, the wireless network frequently drops connection, there is a massive variance in ping times in OSX (but, not in Windows), very slow downloads, network only works in G, not N and very limited range.

So, among those of you with knowledge of the new Macbook Pro, have you experienced problems with Wi-Fi?

    Thanks bunches,

    RR

I have experienced intermittent connection problems on my 13" 2011 MBP. Things will be fine for hours and days on end. I can be connected to the same network for days without shutting down (or putting to sleep) my MBP and not experience any problems. Then, all of the sudden, it will lose the connection to my network. I am using an Apple Airport Extreme basestation broadcasting both an 802.11n (2.4GHz) and 802.11g network. It doesn't matter which one my MBP connects to, it has lost both in the past.

My ping times and connection speeds have been fine though. I get an average of about 10 ms when I connect with the 802.11n network and 13 seconds with the 802.11g whether I am on my MBP running Mac OS X or Windows or on my various other Windows machines. My range also seems to be fine though I haven't really extensively tested it (I would look a little weird walking around my apartment complex parking lot holding my MBP seeing if I can get a connection).

I think the problem is more like a bug and I wouldn't let it deter you from buying a MBP as Apple should have this issue fixed here pretty quick. They tend to be OK when it comes to releasing fixes for OS X/firmware problems.

    I have a 2011 Macbook Pro 17".. I've used several networks with or without WPA2... b, g, and n... 2.4 and 5ghz... never had any problems whatsoever.

    Thanks for the info.

The Wi-Fi problems do not seem to be particularly widespread otherwise there would presumably be thousands of posts to Apple's Discussion board.

However, there are some sophisticated users there who are very frustrated with Apples response to their issues. Several users have replaced machines and experienced the same problems.

I plan to wait and see the outcome of this before pulling the trigger - I am not in desperate for a new computer and do not want to take the risk of being frustrated with W-Fi problems on a $2,000+ purchase.

Here's a good article on Anandtech that helped me feel good about the wifi.

No problems whatsoever. Used on several networks.
