Ok, I just tried pushing it in almost all the way and it did finally take it. Is this normal, am I meant to have to push it in so far? Anyway, thanks, Seshan!

Ok thanks, guys. Now another problem with the optical drive - I had to restart the computer after downloading a codec and when it started back up the disc started making weird juttering noises, as if it was hitting something on the inside of the laptop. The laptop was on my bed and when I put it on the table it stopped making the noise. As soon as it was even slightly on an angle it started doing it again. The disc eventually stopped spinning and the sound stopped, but as soon as it starts working again when I try to open a file from the disc it starts making the weird sound again (this time intermittently, but obviously still dependent on the angle of the laptop). I don't want to have to keep the notebook on my desk each time I use a DVD, is this a normal occurrence? Should I just ignore the weird sound? It isn't the same as the disc loading or anything, it clearly sounds like it's brushing against something in there as it spins and it's clearly dependent on the angle of the laptop.

The sound of metal sawing? This happens when the dvd is spinning and you incline the laptop. The is the dvd spinning against the metallic enclosure of the optical drive. When reading a dvd, the laptop should be on a flat surface. Try this and i'm sure the problem will be gone. Trust me.

But is this meant to be happening when I incline it only a few millimeters? Am I going to be unable to watch a DVD with the laptop in my lap? I ended up trying to copy the files from the DVD to the hard drive and it is saying that one of the files is corrupted (my boyfriend suspects that the DVD may have been scratched while spinning). So I tried canceling the copying - didn't work. I then tried just ejecting the disc - also didn't work as it is saying that the disc is in use. So now the disc is stuck in there :/

Edit: I just had to force-quit Finder to get the DVD out... The DVD is completely scratched in circles, all around. Literally, every single bit of it is scratched as if a needle went through every inch of the disc. ?

Sounds like you have a bent drive or enclosure. I would contact AppleCare and arrange a repair.

Yep, i second Budding. I hear this sound when i incline the laptop ~70 degrees, but my dvds don't come out scratched. Yours sounds a bit too sensitive. But personally, i don't move the laptop when it's running a dvd.

Thanks, guys. I returned the laptop today and got a full refund. I decided not to get the laptop exchanged, it wasn't a very good first experience!

    Thanks again :)

    Sorry to hear that.
The macbook is an excellent machine but I guess yours just have a few minor problems with its optical drive.

I wouldn't really call scratching the heck out of discs & leaving the files corrupted minor, but yeah I'm sure not all of them are like this. I really loved the OS. I might end up getting one in the future, just not in the near future :)
