After doing some research on this board for a while, I purchased a 15inch SR MacBookPro. After purchasing parallels and word, the total with tax was almost $2400.

First impressions was that the OS (never used Mac before) was extremly user friendly and the notebook looks great.

My only complaint is that the notebook runs incredibly hot, s this normal?

What can be done to lower the heat output besides shutting it off or cracking the notebook open myself to try some new thermal toothpaste?

Also the screen dims after like a minute byitself and then goes black, how do I turn this feature off?

The screen diming is on the power saving settings.

How hot does the MBP get for you? Download and install smc fan (free ware fan control) it also tells you the temp. for CPU, GPU and a few other things. I would set the fans to run at 3000rpm always. It is not loud and keeps the MBP cool.

The MBP is known be to extremely hot, so there's nothing you could do. The screen dimming is caused by the ambient light senor, but as I don't have my mac in front of me, I can't tell you exactly how to adjust that

First of all, congrats on your new MBP! :)

The MBP does run hot. My only suggestion if you don't want to break open the MBP (which I don't recommend) is get a laptop cooler.

Your screen dims because it wants to conserve energy. Only when you leave it there will it dim (if you're moving around your cursor or typing on the keyboard it will brighten back up). To disable this, go to System Preferences > Energy Saver, click the Options tab, and uncheck the "Automatically reduce the brightness of the display before display sleep" box. This will stop the screen from dimming.

The screen goes black because it goes even further in conserving energy :p. To adjust this go back to the Sleep tab in Energy Saver and just drag the "Put the display to sleep when computer is inactive" pointer to wherever you like.

Congratulations! As far as heat goes, remember that it is aluminum and it is going to feel hotter than a plastic case. That does not mean that the components inside are running too hot. One more thing, I know SMC FanControl is fairly safe, but be careful with utilities like that that alter the way the hardware works. Apple set the fan speed to certain specifications and tinkering with that is not always wise. I doubt most of us are more knowledgeable about cooling than an Apple engineer.
