Are the multitouch trackpads on the new MBP's larger than the older ones? Are they the same size as the ones on the AIR? Just from the pictures it doesn't look like they are any bigger.

I hope not. It's big enough as it is. I also agree it doesn't look any bigger, but I don't want it bigger and have to deal with the weird issues the MBA users are dealing with (it's bad at filter out accidental input apparently).

No, they are the same size as they've always been.

Yeah, any bigger and your palms would always be getting in the way anyway.

^^no kidding, I expected them to update them to something new, similar to the MacBook Air,

here is hoping an update is possible, but not an issue either way really.

    Unfortunately, I don't believe it's possible.

Older MBPs and even current MBs don't have the Broadcom control interface that's necessary for Multi Touch.

Yea, I remember them saying that the MBA has a similiar (if not the same) chip as the iphone/touch. So it looks like its a hardware thing.

But it'd be nice if the old trackpads would have multitouch.

If you really wanted to, it's probably possible to replace the old trackpad with the new one.

Doubt it would be that simple. If theres a new chip, its probably on the logic board, not just in the trackpad. Because there is no chip in the older trackpad, just some trace wires connecting to the board.

Since the new MBP's are using this new chip, can we assume that when / if apple release their newly patented gestures it will work with these new MBP's / MBA's?

Anandtech had some unboxing photos of the new MBP, and they are 100% identical to the previous MacBook Pro in exterior design, so no, the trackpads aren't any larger :).

I'm pretty sure that was the idea behind them.

Thats good, so if i were to get a MBP now, i wont have to be too concerned about upgrading for the gesture features in the future since it probably be available via software updates.

But knowing me, I would want the next release when it arrives regardless, if it had huge change or not, just the way an IT freak.
