I purchased a new MBP at the local Apple store on Saturday morning. I am very excited and so far nearly everything has lived up to the hype. This is my first MAC but not my first apple (I had a Apple IIgs, some 20+ years ago).

To begin with I have not calibrated my screen yet but I have noticed what appears to be two light spots on the top menu bar. The "V" in the View menu has a bright spot and in the middle of the top menu bar almost under the camera is a very large bright spot. The interesting thing is that when I move the black mouse cursor over the spots they do turn completely back. This shows that they are not really stuck, but they are clearly lighter than the surrounding menu bar.

I would like to get the light area's fixed, is it bad enough for Apple to replace the entire MBP or screen (your best opinion's please).

Secondly I installed open office, which seems to run semi fine. The biggest issue I have is that when I click on the icon (attached to the dock) xterm opens and must time out before I can actually have access to the program. Am I a total newb and completely missed something along the way or did I install it incorrectly?

I appreciate all the good information on this site, I have been lurking for months but this is my first post :D

    Thanks in advance!

Hahaha. Sorry. Too funny. No problems with your screen. It's jut the menu bar showing the wallpaper of your background, which has stars in it. :D

    See? Watch this?

Click the apple logo in the top right, go to System Preferences, click Desktop and Screen Saver, and then take the check out of: Translucent Menu Bar.

    Voila, problem solved. :)

Newb 101 strikes again, I knew it was something weird when the black mouse pointer was black at those locations and I knew the experts here would have the fast answer!

OMFG, I had so much fun reading ur problem. I was actually loling. hehe. Well for your second problem, I suggest you install NeoOffice. It's the same thing as OpenOffice, but it's ported better into the Mac environment so you don't get that weird X11 thing.

Yeah, use NeoOffice for a free office application for Mac OS X :).
