So i want to install a new 250GB hard drive in my macbook pro but have heard some problems with this. I have heard many screen issues arising from replacing the HD. Has anyone else experienced this? I know it sounds ridiculous that a HD would cause problems but if the screen work good before and has issues after........? I have read several reviews on how to take the computer apart, and none of them seem complicated. Is there anything special i need to pay attention for? Any hard drives in particular that work well with the MBP? Please let me know what you guys think. 120gb is NOT enough space and i also dont want to ruin my brand new laptop. Thanks in advance.

I know this isn't in response to your answer... But you could hook up an external HDD. Thats the safest and easiest solution.. Including adding the HDD to the network so you don't have to plug it in directly to the machine to function or use.

yeah 120gb is no where near enough, i mean i have ~1/2 a terabyte of space on my desktop and i wouldnt say that that much space is unusual. i got the lower end mac, 2.2ghz model and got the 160gb upgrade because im dont want to mess with changing hdd and when that runs out, which it most definately will, i'll buy a portable firewire hdd, because i dont think its worth messing around with.
also you can get a certified apple tech to do it and that why you dont void warranty but im sure it would be a rip off.

The only real option commonly available on the market these days is Hitachi's 200Gb 7200RPM Travelstar 7k200. The others don't have 200GB 7200rpm drives out yet as far as I know.

Ya i have a few 500gb external hd. I travel a lot and i dont want to deal with the extra cases. I have checked many tutorials which go over step by step how to replace the HD in the MBP. (Its very simple) So im not sure why i am hearing these problems. Any other ideas? Thanks

I upgraded to the above hard drive 2 days ago. Working great, no probs. Just make sure to snap the keyboard back in and hear the "snap" of the clips go in. I missed a clip or 2 the first time around. Also when taking off the keyboard be careful with your fingers, you can get cut.

I had a 160 GB put in mine and -- to get back to one of your questions -- have had no screen troubles whatsoever. As for the 250, no guarantees, but I don't see why it would have any effect.

I was also considering upgrading to the 7200rpm 200gb drive. how much would it cost to have an apple tech install it for me? I don't have a problem installing it myself, but I'd like to keep my warranty...

it voids the warranty; I think there's a tamper-proof sticker somewhere inside the mbp that you have to get through in order to swap out the hard drive...

They'll most likely just say the problem was caused when you broke this or that when you installed the HDD even if it's completely unrelated, and thus blame it on you.

It's just an excuse, but it can be annoying.

Just put the old HDD back and they won't know a thing when they service it.
