i just ran 3dmark06 for a second time. this time, i forced the clocks to the nvidia recommended: 450/900.
i scored exactly 100 points higher.
my original score was 3406. this time i scored 3506. im still using the default bootcamp drivers which obviously arent optimized for 3dmark- it even has the audacity to tell me so.
however- this should prove that the macbook pro is slightly underclocked at the factory settings. the performance difference between the factory underclocked state and the normal clocked state are marginal at best.
i did not know this going in, so i had a huge ceiling fan blasting the whole table, artificially keeping the machine very cool. i dont know for sure how upclocking it to the nvidia spec will affect the heat in normal circumstances.
my guess in hindsight is that it would be a low to moderate (at most) heat increase, due to the slight performance benefit and inferred marginal underclocking in the first place.
chew on that.
that is a 3506 / 3406 = 1.03, or a 3% better score, for those keeping track. since part of that score is based on the cpu, that means that upclocking the gpu resulted in slightly more than a 3% gpu speed increase. im thinking like 5%. that means, that the macbook pro is barely underclocked.

try http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/ driver?
how hot would it go during the tests...if you don't have any external cooling?
