Hi, I am a student who has a macbook pro, I do not want to pay Microsoft a lot of money for office, so I use Neooffice as a substitute. Well, for the spreadsheet, I do not like it that much, one reason is there are some functions missing, for example, dividing a column into several columns.
I think that I need to pay some money for office

*If* you are a university student, you might be able to get MS products for quite cheap. (~$25, etc.) I'd recommend that you wait until Tuesday for Office 2008, and then ask your university bookstore for it.

While I'm quite happy with the word processing capabilities of NeoOffice, I get really pissed when it truncates doc files I receive from other people.....so grudgingly I'll get MS Word, once the new version is out.

Yes, I totally agree with you. I will wait till Tuesday, open office really need a long way to catch up with Microsoft.
By the way, why are you putting ** in front of *If*?

My experiences with neoOffice and OpenOffice have not been a good one. Compatabilty problems, lack of features, and bad UI. Not to mention the time I tried opening a .rtf file I recieveed from my professor that froze OpenOffice and then my computer (running Ubuntu Gusty Gibbon) requiring a hard shutdown. (the document itself was only 3 pages long but OOo sat at 100% cpu and loaded "imaginary" pages. When it got up to 100,000 or so I hit the button for a restart.)

Microsofts Student package for $140 or so is a good deal. Word, excel, and powerpoint are almost a must in college and I don't mind paying extra $$ to have everything run smooth without any grief.

Agreed, it's a shame that MS Office looks like it will remain the standard forever but the alternatives just don't match it in terms of compatibility. I love iWork but Pages isn't compatible enough.
I will be buying MS Office when I go to Macworld on Tuesday but I wonder will it be worth it without the VB or Macro support?

It would be nice to have those features, but I can't see myself using it all that much. After going through all the hassle of trying to use openoffice as my main word processor/spreadsheet app...office for students seems well worth the price for what you get.

Once again, agreed. Go with what works. I have been trying to boycott MS Office in favor of iWork and although Numbers and Keynote are near perfect it's Pages that needs to be replaced by Word so I will be buying MS Office just for Word.
I will however speak to Microsoft about their reasons for dumbing down Office 2008 although we know it's to keep the Macs out of the enterprise sector but I suspect I will get a different answer at Macworld. I'll report back after Tuesday.

Anyone who purchased Office for Mac 2004 recently also get the upgrade to 2008 (pay only shipping?. I bought 2004 on Black Friday from Amazon.com for $124, and Apple had a $100 rebate, as well as the offer for 2008 for $7.99 or something like that. I think I made out pretty well on those deals (though I've gotten an email from MS saying 2008 is out of stock (funny since it hasnt been released yet) and my shipping date went from 1/14/08 to 2/11/08. I dont mind - 2004 is working fine for what I use it for.

Yeah, Microsoft had a deal where if you got Office 2004 after some date, you'll get a free upgrade to Office 2008 paying only cost of shipping.

Microsoft Office is still dominant as the office suite, and nothing seems to be close to challenging that. I don't have too much of a problem either, there are innovations going on in the Office department of Microsoft and I like them. iWork '08 is an alternative for some home users who just need an office suite more powerful than NeoOffice, and Microsoft Office is for those that need even more. I'm in between the two; iWork '08 and Microsoft Office for Mac.

Well the genus "student" may have numerous instances; I had no idea what kind of student you were, so I emphasized the " If you're a university student" etc.....

Where are you a student at? Many universities offer heavily discounted copies of Microsoft Office.

Even if you can't get an educational discount copy of Office, are any members of your family eligible for the discount? I know for the PC version of Office, the educational discount applies to immediate family members of the buyer.
