    Hi :)

I just got my Airport Extreme router, and I set up a wireless network easily. However, it doesn't cover the whole house.

So I have another router (Asus WL-530G) and I am thinking of using either of the two routers as a base and the other one as an extender.

I have tried extending the Asus network with the Airport.I got this message:"The network you selected cannot be extended"

I tried setting up a WDS network with Airport Extreme as main, remote or relay. None worked, it said no other apple airport device can be found.

Is this a compatibility issue, or did i miss something?

    Any help appreciated.

plug the asus to the lan port of the apple airport extreme. then be sure to manually change the ip address of the asus to another one because if these(apple and asus) have the same ip, there will be a conflict. I'm not sure if the subnet must be changed. may be somebody else can elaborate on this topic.

But personally, why would you want to use the asus as an extender. Assuming that the asus is wireless g, the apple airport extreme will give you a better range than the asus. So there's no point in upgrading. also, do you have wireless n on your laptop? If you don't, you won't be able to use the airport extreme to the max.

Hehe the main reason I bought the Airport was because of wireless N. Of course I have it on my laptop (I have a Unibody Macbook Pro 2.53) and I notice better range on the laptop than on the iPod Touch.

I will try what you said but keep the help coming in case it doesn't work. And thanks.

    Anyone else have tips?

Buy an Airport Express and use that to extend the wireless network on your Extreme base station. I've got two of them in my house to extend my network and they work great!!

Other than that cos the Extreme was way overpriced in the first place and it's a real shame that it cannot cover the whole house.

There is never going to be a single solution which will cover every single persons entire house. Atleast Apple gives you an alternative, and the Express is a great portable router to take with you if you ever need one.

I just wanted to find out if I can extend a network with the Extreme and only one person has addressed my problem and answer my question specifically. I told you the Express was out of the question. I already spent 260 bucks for a router. (yes it's that expensive in our country, but at least we have it)

Anyway do you know why it tells me that it cannot extend the network?

Because I believe you can only extend it through an Airport Express when using the AEBS.

I read the other day where apple is coming out with a NEW wi-fi extender that'll make it 5-6 times stronger in distance,

if you can find an old linksys wrt54gl with 3rd party firmware they make an excellent repeater ( b and g only ) I find the airport units are pretty mediocre in range and repeatability

I've had zero problems using my AEBS and two Airport Expresses to extend my network. When you start mixing in other non-Apple hardware, you're bound to have issues.

WNR is a nice unit, expect good coverage

Khris how large is your network footprint to need a primary and 2 repeaters?

My home at it's longest point is 80 feet. I use one Express as a repeater to ensure I have good signal inside and outside in my yard/deck, and the other as a wireless bridge to connect wired devices via the wireless connection.

Oh okay, thanks :) I discovered that my Asus cannot extend networks and the Extreme cannot extend the Asus because the latter is 802.11g. Also, I relocated the router and now it covers most of the house

you must have alot of interference, I find N's usually good for 50+m in residential areas
